Get a GLIMPSE of the Champions

The grass season and all it’s wonderful stakes events begins in earnest today with the Grade 2 Nassau Stakes, always a good event and this year is no different.

While the turf has been saturated with rain for a couple of days, the turf was short and on the very firm side before the rain.

The showdown today is Horses of the Year CAREN, the 2017 champion, and CATCH A GLIMPSE, the 2015 champ.

Both gals are speedy types, both love a 1 1/16 mile turf race and it should be interesting to see if the latter can get back to winning form, even if she has been running good Beyer Figures in the U.S.

STORMY VICTORIA is the tricky one in the small field as she brings super form in from New York for trainer Christophe Clement. The French bred, who was beaten only 2 lengths by Lexie Lou in this race last year, schooled in the Woodbine paddock on Friday and looks very strong in this spot.

The co featured LADY ANGELA STAKES may be a sprint for Ontario sired gals but a starter in the June 11 Woodbine Oaks could emerge.

The speedster CONQUEST VIVI, unbeaten last year in 3 races for Conquest Stable, is now owned by Stronach Stables and trained by Mark Casse. She had a dull run on turf in the winter and will try to run them off their feet. Plenty of early pace in this race and a wide open event.

REMEMBERING RICK KENNEDY

Owner and breeder RICK KENNEDY, who burst onto the local racing scene, and was taken on a wild international ride by his great AFLEET has passed away. Kennedy’s familiar white, black stripes and pink silks were everywhere in the mid 80s with not only the great Afleet but One from Heaven, Avowal, Storm on the Loose and Matter of Honor.

Kennedy’s horses were trained by Phil England and managed by Reade Baker.
