While Alberta awaits construction of its brand new racetrack, Century Mile, racing will continue at Northlands Park Racetrack in Edmonton.

Earlier this year, it was announced that 2016 would be the final season of Thoroughbred and harness racing at Northlands, but the track has reached an agreement with Horse Racing Alberta that will see races continue through June 2018.

Century Mile is expected to open in July 2018. Century Casinos announced plans in September to build the $50-million facility near the Edmonton International Airport. It will feature the only mile-long track in Western Canada, include stabling for 800 horses and house 1,100 slot machines. That is the maximum number of slots allowable by the Alberta government, and approximately double that which is currently available at Northlands.

“We are very grateful to Northlands Park for allowing racing to continue into 2018. The agreement allows the industry a seamless transition into Century Mile while addressing the unique needs of all breeds. We are very pleased at the spirit of cooperation that is indicated by this licence extension,” said Shirley McClellan, CEO of Horse Racing Alberta.

“This is a win/win/win,” noted Tim Reid, president and CEO of Northlands. “It is a win for the HRA in that this deal provides stability and a go forward plan for the horse racing community. It is a win for the City of Edmonton in that it allows administration time to evaluate future Area Redevelopment Plans in accordance with the Council motion and timelines and it is a win for Northlands in that it affords us the time to continue to work on our future development plans.”
