A new organization opposing horse slaughter in Canada is being launched by a Blackstock, Ontario woman. Melissa Monteith has formed the Alternative Equine Community to raise awareness about this issue and develop alternative strategies for dealing with unwanted horses.

Monteith said her goals include establishing a plan for offering low-cost gelding and euthanasia services, organizing adoption/surrender events and finding ways to help rescues and shelters improve their operations.

She would also like to educate horse owners on creating life plans for their horses by providing information on end of life options, and lease agreements, for example.
