WHIMSICAL winner of the 1906 PREAKNESS STAKES – only 5 fillies have won the 2nd jewel of the American Triple Crown
WHIMSICAL STAKES – Grade 3 – first graded stakes of the Woodbine meeting
The second filly to ever win the PREAKNESS STAKES, Whimsical was foaled 1903 at Raceland Stud in Kentucky. She was sired by the Orlando, out of the mare, Kismet, who was sired by United States Racing Hall of Fame stallion, Hindoo.
As a two-year-old she finished second when racing against colts in the Champagne Stakes. In the Preakness Stakes she led from the start and won easily[2] in a time of 1:45 by 4 lengths over Content and Larabie. In this period, the race was held at Gravesend Race Track on Coney Island, New York.
The Whimsical Stakes at Pimlico Race Course is a 6 furlong race named for her and is raced on Preakness weekend.
Woodbine’s WHIMSICAL STAKES was inaugurated in 1956 and was run at Greenwood. The first edition was won by Richie Papa’s WILLIES FOLLY.
The race has been won by top mares such as NOT TOO SHY, WONDER WHERE, ICE WATER, ETERNAL SEARCH and PROSPECTIVE DOLLY.
This year’s renewal is a difficult betting race with some good speedsters in the mix with winter raced gals and many stars from 2014 including Sovereign Award nominees EXECUTIVE ALLURE and SWEATER WEATHER .
