HAIR RAISING MILE COMING UP
Gary Barber has 2 major contenders in super Mile line-up

 

Gary Barber is the latest Mark Casse owner to celebrate big wins at Woodbine, having won the Queen’s Plate with Lexie Lou this summer. On Sun day, after Lexie Lou tackles older mares in the Canadian Stakes, Barber will have JACK MILTON and KAIGUN (co-owner) in the $1 million Woodbine Mile.
The big owners are out for the big three races on Sunday (as well as the big 2 races on Saturday, the Natalma and Summer) – Barber, Sam-Son Farms, Jim and Susan Hill, Ken and Sarah Ramsay and John Oxley.
Five major races, all on grass, over 2 days – it will be a superb weekend at Woodbine on one of the best grass courses in the world.
Rain is expected Wednesday and Thursday but so far the only tough weather news this weekend is that it may be quite chilly!

In addition to a ton of interesting races, there are a number of events taking place at Woodbine, some of which will be made known at the Thursday press conference and post position draw.

While the terms “competitive” and “wide open” are overused when describing a field of horses, this year’s Mile has a lot of very solid graded runners who are seeking to move forward in the miler standings. The 2 best milers in North America are SEEK AGAIN and WISE DAN and the ones right behind them are in thie field.

SUMMER FRONT should be favoured; he is a 5yo by war Front in from New York but coming off 2 second-place finishes in Grade 1’s in Calfirnoa. He does not win very often any more but his running style and turn of foot will do well on this course.
GRAND ARCH just about beat SEEK AGAIN in the Fourstardave (Grade 2) last time – he needs to be moved at the exact time but he is a good one for Alberta’s Jim and Susan Hill.
JACK MILTON was just behind Grand Arch in the Fourstardave and had some trouble while KAIGUN just won the Play the King.

This race will be won by less than a length.

The CANADIAN STAKES is a Win and You’re In and LEXIE LOU meets older mares including last year’;s champion turf female SOLID APPEAL, also competing for Jim and Susan Hill.

SAM-SON FARMS could have horses in all 3 races on Sunday – HIS RACE TO WIN in the Mile, ALDOUS SNOW in the Northern Dancer and a pair of gals, Dance Again and Deceptive Vision in the Canadian.

KEENELAND – CHIEFSWOOD BUYS TAPIT FILLY FOR $1,000,000

 

Through the first two sessions, a total of 241 yearlings have been sold for $70,953,000, up slightly from $69,621,000 last year when 269 horses were sold during the same period. The average of $294,411 rose 13.75 percent over $258,814 in 2013, and the median increased 25 percent from $200,000 to $250,000.

 

 

Robert Krembil pulled the trigger during the first two sessions of the Keeneland September yearling sale, purchasing a a $1 MILLION filly by TAPIT out of Grade 3 winner Super Espresso, by Medaglia d’Oro and a filly by Bernardini – Oonagh Maccool by Giant’s Causeway for $600,000 from Taylor Made Sales Agency.  The Tapit filly’s 3rd dam is Broodmare of the Year Courtly Dee. The  Bernardini filly is classically bred and typical to the mares Chiefswood owns – much stamina and turf. Oonagh MacCool was a Grade 2 winner in the US of $379,000 and her first 3 foals are all winners and one of Grade 3 placed.

 

 

JIM AND ALICE SAPARA, who won the Queen’s Plate in 2006 with Edenwold, have not raced many horses in recent years but are back in action as they bought an Unbridled’s Song filly for $320,00 on Monday, just about the same price they reportedly were set to pay for the Philanthropist yearling that topped the Woodbine sale last week at $325,000.

WOODBINE WINNERS FRIDAY – SUNDAY

 

 

The emphasis on the 3 days of racing last week (following the long weekend) was on LONGSHOTS!

The first PICK 4 on Friday paid $55,000 with JMBETS.ca pick of the day BILBY RHODE in the middle paying $30.

Friday began with MAYTHEFOURTHBWITHU winning a 450,000 claiming race for 3yo fillies for Frank DiGiulio Jr and Robert Tiller. Patrick Husbands rode and that would set the stage for a great weekend for the rider. The winner is a Silent Name filly out of Cat’s Calling and she has 4 wins from 9 races and over $155,00 in earnings 0 not bad for a gal who cost $3,500 at the yearling sale 2 years ago

Race 2- Well, if you played the Maythefourthbewithu – Vader.. Daily Double you just missed. Vader closed for 3rd after taking a ton of betting support but the winner was Click, owned by Mary Biamonte and trained by Ralph Biamonte. It was the first time at the $8,000 claiming level for the Tomhawk 4yo.

Race 3- for $20,000 claiming and ORBIT EXPRESS won  for the first time in several years and he was dropping to a new low level. He is a Bold Executive 5yo owned by Mr T Stables and trained by Mike Silvera.

Race 4- FIDDELINA became the first winner for Debra Ware this year and she owns and trains the 3yo filly by Alumni Hall out of Smart Skater by Smart Strike. She was bred by Will Farish in Ontario and it was her 16th career race. Tommy Wong rode the filly in this $8,000 maiden claiming race.

Race 5- PRINCESS CANADA, at 40 to 1, led all the way to win this $8,000 claiming race with Erika Smilovsky riding for Chateau Kentucky Ranch and trainer Danny Yu. The Vibank filly  is 2 for 14 in her career and 1 for 9 this year.

Race 6- the longshots in this Pick 4 kept rolling in and it was BILBY RHODE, who tracked the speed and went on to win under Gerry Olguin for Diane Smullen and Vito Perri. Preston Ferris trains the son of North Light 9ire) who was making the 3rd start off the layoff in this $11,500 claiming race.

Race 7 – MISS GIACOMO loves the grass and won this $32,00 race with Patrick Husbands riding her for the first time for Triple K Stables and trainer Dave Cotey. She is 4 for 22 in her career. The $1 Pick 4 came in at $55,000 or $11,000 for 20 cents.

Race 8 – a maiden allowance for Ontario sired 3yos and up at 5 furlongs and GOBELL, owned by Rise Again, won with style in his 6th career race. Devon Johnson rode and it was his first winner at Woodbine. Bred by Linda Mason, the Olmodavor – Smart Zone, by Wild Zone gelding is trained by Gord Colbourne.

Race 9 – THAT’S THE GAFF won this $8,000 maiden claiming race and was the 2nd winner on the day for Mary and Ralph Biamonte. He was bred by Pam Edel and is by Gaff, a son of Maria’s Mon.

SATURDAY – race 1 was a $6,250 claiming raceat 1 1/16 miles that was won by MONETARY MERV for Julia Samulak, wo trains for Greg Samulak and partners. This 5yo gelding by Mobil was dropping to the bottom for the first time and it was his 4th career win. Martin Ramirez picked up his first win at Woodbine this year.

Race 2-, off the turf, maiden allowance, and CLEARER VIEW won for Sam-Son farms and trainer Malcolm Pierce. The grey Tapit 3yo was making his 9th start and 4th on the Polytrack. Eurico da Silva rode.

race 3- longshot BORN TO FLY, making her 2nd career start and first since early July, won this 2yo maiden race for $20,000. The Kentucky bred by Aragorn was eased in her debut and she had blinkers on. Skye Cheretz rode for Dave Cotey, who co-owns with Barry Butzer.

Race 4- A maiden race for $12,500 and from off the pace, MEGA LENGTH broke through for his maiden win in his 13 career start. He was a $12,500 claiming by Frank Cirillo and trainer Steven Chircop 3 starts earlier. He is an Ontario bred by Langfuhr bred by Gus Schickedanz. Patrick Husbands has ridden a few winners for Chircop.

Race 5 – an $8,00 claiming race saw speedy Philego gun to the lead and open up a long margin but he stopped and CAPE ZAVATA rallied to win for the red-hot Larry Cappuccitti stable and A & G Racing. The 5yo by Cape Town has won 2 straight races under Skye Chernetz.

Race 6- off the grass and this maiden allowance for 2yo fillies went to WANNA WIN who came in off the also eligible list. This is a Lemon Drop Kid filly out of Gentle Jazz, owned and bred by Charles Hayden of Lucan, On. Roger Attfield trains and Emma-Jayne Wilson rode.

Race 7 – GRACE PHIl won her 2nd straight race and she was off the claim by Mike Doyle Racing. This was a starter allowance and David Moran rode the gal by Philanthropist who is a stakes winner of almost $40,000. It was her 9th win.

Race 8 – an allowance race at 6 1/2 furlongs for 3yo fillies and the big favourite KAY’S GRACE was up in time to win for Lisa Burry and Mike Dunslow. This is a lovely grey mare by Philanthropist who is 4 for 15 in her career and she was bred by Ballycroy Training Centre. Matt Moore rode.

Race 9 – INTERMIX led all the way to winfor the first time since April of 2012 when he was in England. Owned by Gary Barber, this 4yo was wining for $40,00 claiming in his 2nd race of the season.

Race 10 was a maiden allowance that came off the grass and the winner was BOLD ESPRESSO, who scored impressively for Mentec Mississauaga Industrial Equipment. It was the first win of the season for trainer Earl Barnett. Heather Stringer and Bonnie Peavoy bred this son of Tethra out of Bold Spice by Bold ‘n Flashy who was making only his 3rd career start.

 

SUNDAY – CONQUEST BOOGALOO wins Swynford

The lone Canadian-bred in the 5 horse field, Conquest Boogaloo,  was the rallying winner for Conquest Stables and trainer Mark Casse. The Scat Daddy – Jules Best by Jules 2yo colt was bred by James and Janeane Everatt and Arika Everatt Meeuse and he is 2 for 3 in his career. The Beyer was 55.

Race 1- a claiming race for fillies and mares, non-winners of 3, for $8,000 went to BLUE WATERS, a Speightstown gal owned by John Terdik and ridden by Nick Webb. Trained Sam Dipasquale won this race and the next one too…

Race 2- LIGHT MY PATH won her debut for Murray Stroud in this $40,000 maiden 2yo filly race. The winner is by Sightseeing, by Pulpit and is the 9th foal of a Dynaformer mare who had 3 older winners previously. David Moran rode.

Race 3- Trainer Earl Barnett won his 2nd race of the weekend when PUGSLEY led all the way to win this $30,000 claiming race for Openwood Farm and Tallyho Racing in his 5th start of the year. He is by Mobil, bred by Susan Rasmussen.

Race 4 – a maiden allowance for Ontario sired fillies and mares at 5 furlongs and it was CATCH SOME Z’S and Emma-Jayne Wilson who won in the 6th career race. The winner is owned by Jim Vlahos and trained by Paul Buttigieg, who bred the daughter of Where’s the Ring.

Race 5 -TWO STELLAS won this $8,00 maiden claiming race for Joseph DePaulo and trainer Mike DePaulo. The winner is a Philanthropist gelding bred by Denny Andrews.

Race 6- a maiden allowance for 2yos that came off the grass and was run at 7 furlongs and SILVER RIDE won his debut for Jim and Susan Hill and trainer Brian Lynch. The winner was a $170,000 yearling purchase and he is by Candy Ride out of  mr Greeley mare. The second dam is Winning Colors. Luis Contreras rode.

Race 7- MISSIN MAGGIE dropped from $12,500 when claimed and won this $8,00 claiming race for John LeBlanc Jr and rider Gary Boulanger. The 3yo filly was making her 2nd start in Ontario and she is stakes placed in Manitoba.

Race 9 – the projected hot pace did not really materialize and the winner was ORO VERO,who had missed all of 2013 and was claimed 2 starts back for $20,000. He won for $37,500 and now this allowance race for trainer Norm KcKnight.

Race 10 – the day ends with a wild race for maidens – FIRST ONE ACROSS flipped over behind the gate and got loose and then bumper cars around the last turn as FLYWIRE caused interference and was demoted from 2nd to 6th. The winner was GOLDEN RIVET for Stronach Stables and trainer Dan Vella – a 4yo by Mizzen Mast ridden by Justin Stein.
