“DRAFT” DRAW TO BE USED FOR PLATE

The “draft” style post position selection process will be utilized for the 156th running of the Queen’s Plate on Thursday morning.

The draft draw, first used for the 1998 edition of the Plate, allows the owners and trainers of each runner in the race to choose their horse’s post position.

The order of selection will be established by a random draw that is identical to the “pill pull” method used to determine Plate post positions before 1998.

After the selection sequence is drawn, owners and trainers will have a short consultation period to discuss their choice.

The “connections” will then, in order of the random draw, announce their post position selection.

WOODBINE ON A WET WEEKEND

here’s your wraps

The horsepeople of Woodbine, owners, trainers, workers and more were treated to a cool breakfast trackside Sunday morning with Plate workers and prize giveaways adding to the fun.

The weather was woeful, however, as the rain and mist fell for 2 straight days.

Sunday racing:

mischief

COME TO MISCHIEF had a wild career debut as she won the My Dear Stakes on Sunday for 2yo fillies by 6 lengths with a 78 Beyer Speed Figure, one of the highest Beyers of the entire weekend.

The Into Mischief filly sped 5 furlongs in 57.19. Harvey Swartz and Martha Gonzalez own the filly who was bought by Nick Gonzalez for $11,000 at the Keeneland September sale last year. Tyler Pizarro rode this Kentucky bred filly.

Speaking of bargain yearlings – how about FEELIN GROOVY, who won his debut on Sunday in race 1 for Robert Tiller who got this guy for $5,000? The Not Bourbon gelding is a Kentucky bred out of Halo’s Gleam by Halo and he beat 3 rivals (two got loose before this 2yo race and one was scratched) under Euricoa Rosa da Silva who barely moved on the bay.

more Sunday –

Race 2 – ALLOWED may have fallen down in his last race but he won this $20,000 claiming race with a late surge under Steve Bahen. Franz Crean owns, trains and bred the son of Full Mandate.

race 3- what a girl, that BEAR’S PEARL. She won again, her 10th career score and the daughter of Seeking the Dia is a homebred for Bear Stables and Mike DePaulo trains. Da Silva rides this grey 5yo whowon this prep for the Royal North Stakes (off the grass)

race 4 – Soli Mehta and partners’ HESA BIG DUDE won this $15,00 claiming race in his season debut, keeping the Kevin Attard train going. Oh, and Luis Contreras is as hot as a jockey can be, he rode this 5yo by Fusaichi Pegasus.

Contreras also won on SAVANNA CITY, the first winner of the season for Brandon Greer, who trains the Old Forester filly for owner and breeder Janet Ward. She won the 1 1/16 mile maiden allowance race with a late rally.

Another trainer getting the first win of 2015 was Ted Knight, whose grey mare STRAWBERRY SCARLET dead-heated to win the 9th race, an allowance event, with IDA BAMBINA. Scarlet is one of the last Windfields Farm-bred runners and she was claimed last fall for $6,250. Erika Smilovsky rode.

Ida Bambina is a Where’s the Ring filly who came off a vet scratch to share this win and she is owned by Charles Buscaglia and Samotowka Stables. Mike Depaulo trains.

And CONNECT WITH ME posted the day’s best Beyer Figure with a 79 score in the finale, an Ontario sired allowance race. The son of Tap Day led all the way to win in 1:22.51, staying clear of lots of trouble at the start. A homebred for Grinsteins Stable, he was the first winner for Claudia Rabstein this season. Martin Ramirez rode.

CERTAINLY SURTSEY91 Beyer Figure for 7 furlongs in 1:27.02 on bog-like grass
Saturday wrap from Woodbine

SURTSEY loved the relentless rain on Saturday and was very happy when the ZADRACARTA overnight stakes race stay on the turf as she slogged her way to victory for owner and breeder Yvonne Schwabe. This Heatseeker – Kick’em Jenny, by Bold Executive mare is 5 for 17 in her career and she won 2 stakes in the last 2 seasons. Kevin Attard trains and Omar Moreno rode.
Crysta’s Court took the field through an opening quarter in :23.64 but was joined by Executive Allure and Skylander Girl around the far turn, while Silent Treat, making her seasonal debut, had chased the leader early then was tucked along the rail in fourth by jockey Michelle Rainford.

Turning for home, Silent Treat was swung out to challenge the new leader Skylander Girl after a half in :48.14, got to the front, but was immediately joined by Surtsey, who had been fifth early, as the pair began to duke it out down the lane.

Surtsey edged ahead in late stretch while Wavell Avenue, who had broken slowly from the gate, mounted a challenge down the centre of the E.P. Taylor Turf Course, eventually finishing third, a neck further back.

more Saturday…

race 1- INDISCREET CAT, a pretty bad colt by Discreet Cat bred in Ontario by Jim Terdik and now owned by J and K Stable, won his debut under a nie rider by Luis Contreras. The 3yo was winning for $20,000 claiming at 7 furlongs and Sam DiPasquale trains.

race 3 – SCOTTY’S MODEL is still undefeated, now 3 for 3 for trainer Norm KcKnight. The 5yo maiden is by Mr Scotty and she rode the rail under Alan Garcia to the win in this allowance/optional claiming event for fillies and mares. She has had 3 different riders in her 3 wins and 2 of her wins came this year.

race 3 – MISSILE THREAT fired the best shot into the stretch and held off BEARALLLEGS to win this maiden $50,000 claiming race at 1 1/16 miles. The winner is a Sky Conqureror fily out of Cottonpickeminute by Premiership who missed all f 2014 but had been 2nd or 3rd in all three starts this year. Laurie Silvera owns and trains and Bill Sorokolit bred the filly. Omar Moreno did the riding.

race 4- MISS VICTORIA loves to win races. This 5yo mare by North Light is a homebred for Victoria Meadows and she took her 3rd straight win on Saturday in a $10,00 claiming race under Luis Contreras. Nick Gonzalez trains and she is 6 for 26 in her career.

race 5-THEFORGOTTEONONE snuck up on Sleepy P to upset this maiden allowance that came off the grass and was run at 1 mile and 70 yards. The winner was making his 2015 debut for Dansaray Stable and trainer Danny Vella and he was back as a gelding and out of claiming ranks. The son of Marchfield was ridden by Justin Stein.

race 6- Ontario sire VICTOR’S CRY had his first winner as a stallion when KEEPLAFFINLESLIE won this 4 1/2 furlong dash for maiden 2yo fillies for Brian Broughton and John Ross. Emma-Jayne Wilson rode the filly who was making her 2nd career start. She was bred by Dominic Triumbari and is out of the mare Kaliedoscope Kerry, by One Way Love.

race 7 – It would have been buts to think that GARY’S CASHEWS was in a position to win her career debut in this 5 furlong dash when the field turned for home. This 5yo mare by graded stakes place sire Tiltam was miles behind but she started rolling under the red-hot Luis Contreras. She blew by along the inside, off the rail, and flew on by for a nice win for trainer Marty Drexler.
