SADLER’S WELLS passed away at age 30 – he’s represented in the Kentucky Derby next week…see below

WEDNESDAY NIGHT LIGHTS IS BACK!

Wednesday night racing returns to Woodbine tonight after easing into the season that began on April 2.  A card of 8 races is scheduled and hopefully the rain and the heavy. heavy fog will lift by 6:45 post time.

Tonight’s featured race is the finale, an Ontario sired allowance with several speedsters in the lineup including the stakes-placed Bold Executive fellow TEN LAKES.

Also tonight is the first meeting of the 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE TORONTO THOROUGHBRED RACING CLUB! What a super club this has been for local racing fans – trips to tracks and farms and once in a while, a great panel of speakers such as Bill Tallon of the Daily Racing Form. The first meeting tonight is held, as always, in CHAMPIONS – beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Check out the TTRC on FACEBOOK TOO!! Do a search to find them.

GIMME FEVER

11 Days until Derby Day!

Anyone getting Derby fever yet? It’s a cool time of year, officially starting up the big races of 2011.

And who cannot like sifting through workout reports and interviews regarding each 3yo who is going to compete in the Derby?

Okay, so this year’s event lacks a really good horse going in, it’s a mish mash of horses who upset prep races, and the Derby winners in recent years have been far less than stellar (Mine that Bird, Super Saver. eeks).

But it is still the Derby and it is fun to handicap and watch.

BILL OPPENHEIM has an interesting column in today’s THOROUGHBRED DAILY NEWS remarking on the fact that since Beyer Speed Figures were published in DAILY RACING FORM 19 years ago this month, the Derby favourite has at least run at 100 Beyer Figure – until this year.

The faves for this year’s race are running 90s and Oppenheim says, why not bring MASTER OF HOUNDS over from England? His column tells us that hitting the ALL button is a good idea when you are playing exotics etc.

There was some surprising news around the Derby yesterday when TOM DURKIN gave his notice that he is stepping down from the calls of the race for national TV. The events just won’t be the same because really, there is none as good as Mr. Durkin in the business.

SADLER’S WELLS died of old age yesterday, he was 30, and how fitting would it be for one of his descendants to win the Kentucky Derby this year?

Sadler’s Wells, trained by Vincent O’Brien, had a successful racing career – as a three-year-old in 1984 he won the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial, the Irish 2,000 Guineas, the Eclipse Stakes and the inaugural Phoenix Champion Stakes. He also finished second in the Prix du Jockey Club and King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes.

He is represented in the Kentucky Derby by:

MASTER OF HOUNDS, a son of Kingmambo, his dam Silk and Scarlet is by Sadler’s Wells.

TWINSPIRED, this Harlan’s Holiday colt is out of an El Prado mare and that sire is by Sadler’s Wells.

WOODBINE SUNDAY WRAP

SAY NO MORE ran an 85 Beyer Figure to win a the 3rd race, a 5 1/2 furlong sprint for 3-year-olds and the long striding Langfuhr fellow may spin right back in the May 7 Queenston Stakes (see nominees below). Gus Schickedanz’ homebred (also owned in part by D. Howard), Say No More rallied fast, 4 wide and won in 1:03.15 over a quick surface.

Jockey Rihard Dos Ramos won 2 races, Say No More and then BREAK EVERY RULE, who paid $16 to win race 6 for maiden $20,000 fillies. The British Columbia bred by Terrell was the first winner for trainer John MacKenzie this season.

Other winners of note included RASHNAA, well prepared by Robert Tiller to win her 4th in her last 6 and first outing of the year. The Tapit mare has been a goldmine for 3 Sons Racing as she won an allowance/optional claimer on Sunday under Luis Contreras.

The local sire LEGAL JOUSTING had a nice winner when RED EAGLE won his maiden on the engine at 5 1/2 furlongs. The bay colt won the maiden allowance in 1:03 3/5, a 78 Beyer Figure and it was Eurico Rosa da Silva who won for Racing Canada and Ninela Thoorughbreds and trainer Abraham Katryan.

STEWARD’S CORNER – WEBSITE FOR NYRA…

Starting with the upcoming Belmont Park spring/summer meet which starts on Friday, April 29, the stewards at The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) tracks will begin posting weekly recaps to the Stewards’ Corner section on NYRA.com.

The recaps, usually posted on Wednesdays, will include the following information:

    Late Scratches (Paddock and On-Track)

Official New York State Racing and Wagering Board (NYSRWB) Rulings

    Official Notices to Jockeys

Riding Infraction Penalties (Suspensions and Fines)

“This is a fan-friendly initiative that will bring more transparency by expanding the amount of information made available to the wagering public,” said New York State Racing and Wagering Board Chairman John D. Sabini. “The Stewards’ Corner represents handy, one-stop shopping for information – and we’re delighted to partner with NYRA and the Jockey Club to better inform the fans of thoroughbred racing.”

At the start of the 2010 Saratoga Race Course meet, the stewards – one appointed by NYRA, one appointed by the NYSRWB, and one appointed by The Jockey Club (TJC) – began posting write-ups on race-day decisions involving the official order of finish to the Stewards’ Corner section on NYRA.com.

TOWCESTER RACECOURSE, the attempt to ban whips

from The Guardian

“It’s up to us to try to educate the public and I don’t mean that in a condescending manner,” he said. “We have to explain how whips are there to encourage horses forwards. – trainer Richard Guest

The racing world has spent Easter whipping itself into a frenzy over the question of whether jockeys should be allowed to hit their horses to make them go faster. The executive at this racecourse in rural Northamptonshire believe that banning such behaviour would bring them bigger crowds, though there is limited scope for that on the evidence of Sunday, when an estimated 7,500 packed the stands.

According to Towcester’s general manager, Kevin Ackerman, there has been a “groundswell of public opinion” against the whip, though he admits that this belief is largely based on what journalists have written. He intends to survey the views of his racegoers on two days in late May.
