Tuesday Nov 5 – Keeneland November the focus today and through the week, lots of Canadians selling and some 170 Stronach Stables and Horse Racing League horses are selling, let’s see how many come back to Canada…here is today’s news..
MORE CUP WRAP
It is fair to say (no pun intended) that there are a lot of people who are getting tired fast of having the BREEDERS’ CUP at Santa Anita – speed favouring track, turf races that cross dirt, you name it.
The notion that it should be held there every year is horrific. The California horses thrive there, so do the Euros, but let’s get back to some eastern tracks every now and then please.
MELBOURNE CUP – WATERHOUSE MOMENT
both trainer GAI WATERHOUSE and jockey Damien Oliver have had their share of controversy but they won the MELBOURNE CUP last night with FIORENTE:

All-sources handle for the 14 Breeders= Cup World Championships races was $136,539,014, a 7%
increase over last year’s 15 Breeders Cup-race total of $127,676,366. The 2013 full-card handle was
$160,704,877, an 11% increase over last year’s figure of $144,272,332. Saturday’s 12-race Breeders’ Cup card was $109,183,731, up 13% from the 2012 handle of $96,685,567
At Woodbine, betting on Saturday was $5.2 million, up nicely from last year’s $4.5 MILLION.
However, Friday thoroughbred racing at Woodbine was cancelled so there is no comparison to this year.
So, in our last post, MEN, we talked about the big wins by WISE DAN and MUCHO MACHO MAN and former Woodbine runner RIA ANTONIA, who was picked out by Woodbine trainer Ricky Griffith for $9,000 and then sold privately to current owners Chris Dunn and Looch Racing.
Here are some other Breeders’ Cup thoughts:
BREEDERS’ CUP FILLY & MARE SPRINT – GROUPIE DOLL pushed her naysayers aside, those that said she was not the same horse as the one who won this race last year, and powered to a short win in the 7 furlong dirt test. The Bowman’s Band – Deputy Doll, by Silver Deputy mare is a 5yo with 11 wins in 21 races for Bill Bradley and partners. It was only her 4th race of the season.
Her dam DEPUTY DOLL, by Canadian bred SILVER DEBUT, was killed by lightning in 2009, a year after Groupie Doll was born.
It was a year of repeats (and why not, Sanya Anita is funny-enough a track that it yields big-time horses for courses). MIZDIRECTION, sold last night at the Fasig Tipton November sale, was making her first start since June for Jim Rome and partners and Mike Puype and she rallied to win over dead-hearters TIGHTEND TOUCHDOWN and RENEESGOTZIP.
The winner is a Mizzen Mast grey mare, 5-years-old, and she won 11 of 17 races.
JUVENILE – Anyone looking for Kentucky Derby hopefuls…may not find one in this race.
NEW YEAR’S DAY, a colt by Street Cry (Ire) out of Justwhistlindixie by Dixie Union, came out of nowhere to win in his 3rd career race, and his first since Aug. 31. He had only raced on Polytrack at Del Mar. His owners Gary and Mary West threatened to sue over the dropping of Lasix for 2yo races in the Breeders’ Cup, but it’s likely they were not complaining on Saturday.
Bob Baffert trainee was a $425,000 yearling purchase.
TURF – The excitrment was all about the 4yo filly THE FUGUE, but this elegant Dansili gal could not keep her power going as she was too close, moved too soon and was rundown y MAGICIAN, trained by Aidan O’Brien. The winner made little sense – he had never been 1 1/2 miles, was 9th in his previous race, the St James Palace Stakes and he had been off since June 18. Of course, as a European, he had no workouts, so bettors only had 1st Lasix to go on. Irish bred 3yo is by Galileo.
FILLY & MARE TURF – DANK looked great on paper, on the track and she won a thrilling finish in the 1 1/4 mile turf event. She is a Dansili (GB) 4yo filly who won the Beverly D in her only NA start.
SPRINT – Hot pace in this race was not a surprise and the track had been watered so the speed bias calmed down a little. The brilliant SECRET CIRCLE, winner of the 2yo sprint 2 years ago was making his 2nd start off a 1 1/2 year layoff for trainer Bob Baffert and owned Mike Pegran, Karl Watson and Paul Weitma. A son of Eddington. LAUGH TRACK, a Woodbine stakes winner, was a fast closing 2nd.
-Ria Antonia, who broke her maiden at Woodbine in July when trained by Ricky Griffith, was elevated to the win position after being interfered with by She’s a Tiger.
-Concave (Ontario-bred by Windways Farm Ltd. of King City, ON; owned by Reddam Racing LLC of Windsor, ON) finished ninth.
FILLY AND MARE TURF
-Marketing Mix (Ontario-bred by Sean Fitzhenry) finished fifth.
FILLY AND MARE SPRINT
-Judy the Beauty (Ontario-bred by Adena Springs of Aurora, ON) finished second.
-DImension, ridden by Woodbine regular David Moran, finished fifth.
-Handsome Mike (owned by Reddam Racing LLC of Windsor, ON) finished eighth.
-Bond Holder (owned by Reddam Racing LLC of Windsor, ON) finished fourth.
-Conquest Titan (Woodbine-based with trainer Mark Casse, won the Swynford Stakes on August 24), ridden by Woodbine regular Eurico Rosa da Silva, finished thirteenth.
-Rum Point (owned by Reddam Racing LLC of Windsor, ON) finished twelth.
-We Miss Artie (Ontario-bred by Richard Lister of Toronto) finished seventh.
-Laugh Track (Woodbine-based with trainer Mark Casse) finished second.
-Private Zone (Ontario-bred by Adena Springs by Aurora, ON) finished tenth.
MORE WOODBINE SATURDAY AND SUNDAY BITS
SUNDAY – The 2yo Ontario bred gal SHIFTY, owned by Mike Rutherford, won the 1st race in her 3rd career start. She won the $40K claiming event quite easily and she was bred by Mike Byrne.
Race 2 was another maiden 2yo filly race and the winner was GDANSK for Greg Lang and Mike Ambler and trained Nick Gonzalez. It would be a good day for the Ambler clan as they won later with TONIGHT WE DANCE, who romped in a $20K claiming event later int he card.
GDASNK is a $45,000 yearling purchase by Langfuhr bred by Gus Schickedanz.
Another maiden allowance race, the 4th, was won by Paul O’Brien’s homebred NEESA, a daughter of Sligo Bay (big weekend for that sire). She is out of Red Skiummer by Gulch and was making her 5th career start. Steve Attard trains.
SPEYSIDE won an Ontario sired allowance for Bear Stables Ltd. in race 5. The son of Mobil, bred by Tony and Mary Jane Lamb, was turning back from 1 1/16 miles to 6 1/2 furlongs.
YOUCAN’TCATCHME won her 3rd stake of the year in just her 4th race when she took the ONtario Fashion. The fast gal was lucky as Goldstryke Glory was scratched with a virus. She is a 4yo by The Daddy, owned by Murray Stroud and trained by Sam DiPasquale. She was scratched from the Fasig Tipton November sale. She may have won the Female Sprinter award with that win.
SWEET LEW, a firster by Empire Maker, won the 1st race, a MSW, from post 1 for owner Jake Ballis and trainer Brian Lynch
Race 2 was won by the 6yo AWESOME ECLIPSE at 80 to 1 ( only 9 horses in the race) but he interfeed with DRAGO’S BEST a few times in the stretch and was disqualied. The winner, a Seeking the Best (Ire) 4yo, has won 3 of his last 4 races for HIll n Dale Equine Holdings and Josie Carroll.
Race 3 – an allowance sprint, was won by Ontario sired SPIRIT WARNINGS, a 4yo by Weather Warning owners by Spirit Winds Stable Inc. This is a cool homebred who is 2 for 8 this year.
Race 4 was won by Reade Baker owned and trained 3yo filly MORE THAN BANDEAU, who is 3 for 8 this year. She won her maiden for $5,000 at Fort Erie but has wins for $9,500 and now $20K.
Race 5 was a cool 2yo maiden allowance race for fillies and the winner was 2nd time starter SHANGARRY. This quick 2yo filly is a Florida bred by Greatness. She is owned by Cabarnet Racing and Ed Seltzerm the latter who co-bred the filly. Justin Nixon trains.
PORT SEVERN is 4 for 8 this year for CHiefswood Stable as he won a 10 furlong off the turf allowance in race 6. Rachel Halden trains the Niigon 3yo.
race 11 – PETE’S PITA led most of the way to win the maiden allowance for Centential Farms and Gail Cox – this is the first known winner for Plate Trial Stakes winner PETE’S SAKE. That colt came to Woodbine for the 2000 Trial for trainer Todd Pletcher, stayed with trainer Wray Lawrence from there and then retired to stud. He has had a handful of racing foals and currently stands at Chilala Springs in Ontario.
