CRACK IN THE ARMOR

Quality Road could be out of the Derby

• QUALITY ROAD (Elusive Quality), the likely Kentucky Derby favourite, could be out of the race.

Another quarter crack has been found on a hoof of the colt, not long after he just got over one of those pesky cracks. Trainer James Jerkens is aiming for Sunday or Monday as the colt’s next workout if the ailment can be cleaned and fixed up in time.

The withdrawal of QUALITY ROAD would be a huge blow to the Derby – the race is filled with lots of horses and some beat stories but other than I WANT REVENGE, Quality Road was a serious, serious entrant – perhaps the most talented.

APPROVED – WOODBINE FRIDAY

• Peter Redekop’s APPROVAL RATING won Friday’s feature at Woodbine, edging clear of even-money shot LEONIDES, a California shipper, to win in a field of just 4. There were 2 scratches from the allowance/optional claimer worth $82,000.

The stakes caliber 5yo horse by Lemon Drop Kid was raced by Woodford Racing and trainer Mark Casse but was sold last year for $65,000 to Alistair Roden Bloodstock at the Keeneland November sale. Approval Rating ran 6 ½ furlongs in 1:16.11.

Also on Friday’s card (through 6 races), trainer ROBERT TILLER got his first win of the meeting with SOUTHBOUND AGAIN in a maiden allowance for 4yos and upward. The Carson City gelding led all the way and ran 6 furlongs in 1:10 on the very fast Polytrack.

Pat Husbands and Emma-Jayne Wilson had won two races each through the first part of the card.
