CANADIAN-BRED KAIGUN TAKES ON WISE DAN AGAIN

Quintessential Thoroughbreds Florida and Horsen Around’s KAIGUN, a 4yo Ontario bred gelding by Northern Afleet from Cruising Kirs by Kris s. takes on the might Wise Dan again on Derby day in the Grade 1 Woodford Reserve at 1 1/8 miles on Churchill turf. The chestnut was 2nd to the champ in the Makers Mark Mile recently in the best race of his career. While he would need to go a bit better than that day, this is an improving fellow who does tend to get quite sweaty before his races but he is a good stretch runner. He was bred by Bill Sorokolit.

Derby Dreamers Stable’s BIG BAZINGA races in the American Turf Handicap, Grade2, with a decent shot to be a threat in that grass event.

NORTHLANDS PARK OPENS TONIGHT

Welch, Walcott, Williams, wow!

BY CURTIS STOCK – Edmonton Journal

EDMONTON — When Northlands Park finished last year’s thoroughbred season, they were down to only 11 jockeys and ready to send out S.O.S. signals.

But now, when the horse racing facility opens its doors on Friday night, they will have 18 riders ready to jump into their saddles.

Five of the riders — Neil and Ryan Husbands, Chris Russell, Damario Bynoe and Larry Munoz — are new to Alberta.

The Husbands, both nephews of Patrick Husbands — a seven-time Sovereign Award winning jockey — come from Toronto. Russell comes from California where he rode at Santa Anita, Golden Gate and Los Alamitos. Bynoe, who, like Ryan Husbands, is an apprentice from Barbados, while Munoz arrives from Winnipeg.

At the same time, Scott Williams, Canada’s leading apprentice jockey in 2012, returns to Alberta after riding in Vancouver last year. And Anthony Salgado is also coming back to Alberta after riding in the eastern U.S.

All that doesn’t include the likes of Rico Walcott, who has been

GLENN TODD LURING RIDERS TO HASTINGS PARK
from Derby Bar and Grill Newsletter

NEW RIDERS EXPECTED SOON

FROM GLENN TODD: In my spare the last couple of days I have been able to round-up a few new riders that are interested in coming to Hastings for the year.
With the help of Aaron Gryder we have contacted Sal Gonzalez, Joe Steiner and Alex Bisono.  All three are veteran riders currently based at Santa Anita.
Gonzalez is ready to come on Friday and Gordon Rumble will be handling his book as of tomorrow.
Alex Bisono has to go and get a new passport tomorrow and should be here by the following weekend if not this weekend if he can rush the passport.
We are continuing to talk with Seattle native Joe Steiner who is also ready to come.
They are all US Citizens and shouldn’t have a problem on arrival getting a work permit.
