A FUTURE TOO CLOSE TO CALL

Horsemen wonder what future holds for facility

Posted By RAY SPITERI Review Staff Writer

Living on pins and needles while others negotiate the future of the Fort Erie Race Track has “destroyed the local horse population,” says a long-time trainer.

“I’m very concerned about next year,” said Daryl Ezra, a horse trainer in Fort Erie for the past 14 years. “We’ve been left hanging again. We were promised an answer by the end of August. I would like to know if I should go on welfare with my wife and four children.”

Tuesday was the last day of the 2009 racing season at the 112- year-old border oval.

In each of the past two years, the decision on whether the track would open wasn’t made until the spring -just before the start of the new season.

It caused a lot of anxiety and frustration among people who depend on the Catherine Street facility. Many are dismayed there will be a repeat this off-season.

Horsemen are self-employed and base their decision on which track to race at, and how many horses to keep, on a number of factors.

“(The uncertainty has) destroyed the local horse population,” said Ezra, who is also an owner and former race announcer at the track.

“People are giving horses away.”
