KEENELAND JANUARY SALE DAYS 2 AND 3

On Tuesday, Buttigieg Training Centre picked up Tiz Stormy Now, a five-year-old Tiznow mare in foal to Old Forester, for $10,000 and paid out a further $20,000 for Don’t Cry, an unraced three-year-old Broken Vow-Canopy filly, as a racing prospect.
Dr. John Brown’s Spring Farm paid $1,500 for Wonder of It All, a mare in foal on the southern hemisphere schedule to Bellamy Road.and Alberta’s Highfield Stock Farm bought Expresso Cat, by Storm Car, for $26,000 in foal to Leroidesanimeaux.
Manitoba trainer Lorna Gray bought the three-year-old colt Orchestration (Cherokee Run) for $16,000 as a racing prospect Anderson Farms and Rod Ferguson sold a Canadian bred short yearling by Street Sense – Rare Opportunity,
by Danzig Connection for $195,000 to Scott and Even Dilworth.

The following is a report from THOROUGHBRED DAILY NEWS

The colt is the latest in line of hugely profitable transactions from the 20-year-old Rare Opportunity, whom Anderson Farms and partner Rod Ferguson acquired as an unraced juvenile for a scant $5,400 at the 1994 Keeneland January Sale. Rare Opportunity made only three lifetime starts, but showed plenty of ability. She won her lone juvenile effort at Woodbine, then aired by six lengths in her 3-year-old debut at Keeneland, earning a 101 BRIS figure. In her third and final start, she finished third to Serena=s Song (Rahy) in the GII Black-Eyed Susan S. in 1995. If her $55,000 in earnings paid for her original cost and training expenses, she far outpaced that figure in the breeding shed. Her first foal, Catvantageous (Tabasco Cat), sold for $300,000 as a yearling. Three years later, her son Astral Plane (Tabasco Cat) made $250,000 at auction. Street Sounds, a Keeneland September yearling in 2005, sold to Hidden Creek Farm for $400,000, and in 2008, John Ferguson paid $350,000 for the colt Bursary (Elusive Quality). Keeping with the Street Cry theme, the mare is currently in foal to his Grade I-winning son Street Boss, and is booked back to Street Boss, who stands alongside his sire at Darley.

WALTON SAYS MARITIMER SERVES TO BE ON DERBY TRAIL

A blog post by Jennie Rees of the Louisville Courier-Journal includes an interview with Howard Walton of

Norseman Racing Stable.  Not sure if Ms. Rees called up the owner to actually ask about the Canadian-bred son

of Stormy Atlantic, but the report is, he could be headed to the Derby trail.
The dark bay earned a hefty 91 Beyer Figure when he won the Display Stakes – although his races have been on

Polytrack and turf – no dirt.
Sid Attard, who has had major  Queen’s Plate favourites such as Jiggs Coz etc., trains Martimer, who will begin

training at Palm Meadows soon.

JOYFUL VICTORY 2ND IN RETURN
Canadian-bred tries grass
from Brisnet.com

John Wieczorek’s Instant Style (Forestry), unhurried early, rallied boldly when set down for the drive and was up to best Fox Hill Farm’s favored Joyful Victory (Tapit) by three-quarters of a length in Wednesday’s featured race at Fair Grounds, a $45,000 allowance/optional claimer for fillies and mares going about one mile over the Stall-Wilson turf course. The winner, trained by Bobby Springer and ridden by James Graham, toured the distance over the firm going in 1:40 4/5 as the 9-1 fifth choice. Joyful Victory, favored in last year’s Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks after romping in Oaklawn Park’s Grade 2 Fantasy and Grade 3 Honeybee Stakes, was always well placed but could not withstand the winner late while holding the place by a head. Making her turf debut and away from competition since a fifth-place run in the Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks at Saratoga on July 23, Joyful Victory was the even-money choice in the seven-filly field for trainer Larry Jones and jockey Robby Albarado.

THINKING OUT LOUD ABOUT..THINKING OUT LOUD

Coronation Futurity winner THINKING OUT LOUD, has not raced since he was beaten some 32 lengths for $5,000 claiming in December at Penn National. The son of Regal Classic is of interest to this website and other Canadian racing fans and horse lovers – if you know about this horse, please conttact Thoroughblog.

More local stuff, BEDARRA won for $8,000 claiming at Gulfstream yesterday for Tucci Stables and trainer Nick Gonzalez. The well bred Came Home mare has won over $350,000 in her career and she is 7-years-old.

BRUNO SHICKEDANZ’s homebred 4yo DAZZLE ME DANNY won his maiden for $8,000 claiming at Tampa Bay yesterday at 1-1. Yvon Belsoeur trains.
FEATURE ON FORMER JOCKEY CONSTANT MONTPELLIER:

No more horsing around

Spotlight story Former jockey Montpellier, 50, has taken to speedskating – and he’s excelling at it

By PAUL DELEAN, The Gazette January 12, 2012 5:14 AM

In 18 years riding high-strung and unpredictable thoroughbred racehorses for a living, Constant Montpellier

never suffered an injury as serious as the one he got practising his retirement hobby, short-track

speedskating.

“It happened just over a year ago, at the Gadbois arena in Montreal, where I practised with teenagers,” the

50-year-old former jockey from Dorion recalled in an interview. “It was the day after my first competition at

the Espoirs level (one rung below Elite). We were practising passing and I hit a block, lost my balance, and a

kid hit me from the back. I went into the boards headfirst. Broke two ribs, five teeth and three vertebrae in my

back. I was in the hospital about a week. Worst injury of my life.”

If you thought that might end Montpellier’s dalliance with speedskating, you’re not familiar with his

competitive nature.
