WOODBINE BACKSTRETCH opens in 7 days, training track opens Feb. 19

CATCHING UP WITH…STUART SLAGLE

Woodbine’s new racing secretary has an impressive set of past performances from positions at tracks all over North America.

Stuart Slagle, born in Akron, Ohio, got his first taste of Woodbine and its goings-on in November and he is ready to take over from Steve Lym as race coordinator when entries are taken for opening day on April 8 (for Apr. 11).
“I learned a lot from the last two months of the season,” said Slagle, who grew up in Texas. “I think this is going to be a seamless transition as I work doing what Steve was doing.”
Lym will be moving into a horseman’s relations position after being the racing secretary for 11 years.

“My goal is provide the horsepeople at Woodbine with the best environment for training and racing this year and beyond,” said Lym. “I’ll miss preparing the race card in my role as Race Secretary, but I am particularly looking forward to working as a liaison between the horsepeople and Woodbine management.”

It was about one year since Woodbine began looking for a racing secretary and Slagle came via Hastings Park where he held that same position.

Slagle stumbled upon horse racing when he was in college (he has his  Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology). He had a day off and visited Bandera Downs in Texas. He visited the races a few times each year and was always watching the big races on television with his family. He met an owner/breeder at an off-track betting shop one year, sat in an owner’s box at Arlington and “fell more in love with the sport.”

Slagle worked for Horseplayer Magazine as a website professional and he has been a jockey’s agent . His first racing official job was at Retama Park and his first role as racing secretary  came at Albquerque. He has held positions at several tracks and has moved around a lot because those tracks had short meetings.

Slagle said there will be anything new as far as the racing secretary’s job is concerned for 2015. He reports that stall applications are on on par with the spring of 2014 and is confident Woodbine will not have a problem with filling races.
“I think we are in good shape. The horses can begin shipping in on Feb. 17 and train on Feb. 19.”

Among the new trainers who have applied for stalls this spring is Troy Wismer, who started a few horses last fall at Woodbine and had a record of 4 for 48 in 2014.

Nominations for the Canadian Triple Crown series are due out shortly as is the stakes schedule for the 133-day meeting.

BARBADOS GOLD CUP has 12 runners on list
Ken and Sarah Ramsay poised to win 2nd straight Gold Cup

Five horses nominated at the first subscription stage for the 34th running of the Sandy Lane Barbados Gold Cup on March 7 at the Garrison Savannah have dropped out at the second subscription stage, which closed at the Barbados Turf Club’s office last Friday.

Those out are Saffron Hall (US), Trini Boss (Trinidad and Tobago), Shared Adventure, Sarava Point, Dashing David and the now deceased Discreetwon.

That leaves a 12-horse field that has been boosted with the inclusion of a new Lewin Godding acquisition named Indiano Jones.

Formerly owned in Canada by John Oxley and trained by Mark Cassse, this gelding by A. P. Indy is out of Sharp Susan and has two wins at Woodbine Race Track from 16 career starts.
