THURSDAY MORNING – BOWMAN’S CAUSEWAY IN PLATE TRIAL – DA SILVA TO RIDE, stretch runner has new trainer in Chad Brown after Florida Derby debacle – Trial could get as many as 6 entrant – OAKS draw on the WOODBINE WEBSITE live today…

WOODBINE OAKS – first run in 1956

So, why are so many top 3-year-old filly races called Oaks?

According to horse racing lore, 1778 a dinner party was held at a building called The Oaks near Epsom in Surrey County England. Several men decided to hold a horse race for 3 year old Fillies. The race was run nearby in 1779. The winning horse was called Bridget. She was owned by Edward-Smith Stanley, the 12th Earl of Derby.

DICEY TIMES FOR QUEEN’S DERBY HORSE

RACING POST – Stoute: We’re doing our best with Carlton House

By James Burn and David Milnes 9:10AM 1 JUN 2011

CONNECTIONS of Investec Derby favourite Carlton House remained cautious on Wednesday morning about the chances of

the Queen’s colt lining up at Epsom on Saturday, but were “doing our best” to get him there.

The son of Street Cry knocked a near-fore joint in a routine canter on Monday, prompting fears he may have to miss

the Derby, for which he has been favourite for since his classy Totesport Dante Stakes success last month.

DIVINE MUSIC SETS TRACK RECORD AT FORT ERIE

iFthere was any doubt that DIVINE MUSIC is a better dirt horse than Polytrack, there is not now.

The 3yo son of Songandaprayer – Counterpoise by Storm Cat snuck down to Fort Erie yesterday for an alowance race

following his 5th place finish in the Woodstock Stakes at Woodbine.

The colt, who had been racing very well on dirt at Fair Grounds in New Orleans, won by more than 8 lengths over easy

rivals and sped 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:15.22, bettering Teacher Boynoe’s mark of 1:15.43 from last year. That mark

bettered a 42-year-old record at Fort Erie of 1:15.80.

Divine Music was also the first winner for trainer Malcolm Pierce in Ontario in 2011.

AJAX DOWNS – THE WAVE IS DEFEATED!

ONE KOOL WAVE, the qUARTER RACING oWNERS OF ONTARIO INC. HORSE OF THE YEAR of 2010 AND AN UNBEATEN 2YO AFTER 8

RACES, was nabbed at the wire in an allowance race on Sunday at Ajax Downs in Ajax, ontario in a huge upset. THE

DIAMOND SIDE, ridden by Helen Vanek rushed up and edged the grey speedball at 10 to 1 odds for owner/trainer Eric

Lehtinen and team.

One Kool Wave was ridden by John McInerny.

Last year’s press release on awards night:

Ajax, Ontario — Two-year-old superstar One Kool Wave was named “Horse of the Year” by the Quarter Racing Owners of

Ontario (QROOI) during their annual awards banquet held Saturday at the Ajax Hilton.

This is the first time that a 2 year old has received the award since inception of the Quarter Racing Owners of

Ontario.

As noted on the front cover of the Awards booklet “Quest for Perfection”, the son of world champion and first crop

sire Wave Carver is as close as any horse could get.

One Kool Wave, who is affectionately known as Heston, was a perfect 8-for-8 including four stakes wins and a track

record . In six of his eight starts he ran speed indexes of over 100, winning most of the races by several lengths.

He earned $164,301.

The gray gelding is out of the stakes winning mare Starawflyin Bud’s mare One Kool Bud. He was bred by Robert

Bailey, raced for Bailey and Don Ito, was trained by Don Reid and ridden by Kim Ito.

IN TRINIDAD, CONTRERAS WINS THERE TOO!

Woodbine’s leading rider LUIS CONTRERAS won two races on the big Midsummer Classic racing day at Santa Rosa Park

yesterday in Trinidad. The rider did not win the big one, but took a couple of scores anyway…

PRESS RELEASE… Touch D Road on road to Triple Crown

TOUCH D ROAD literally slaughtered 10 “rivals” to win the rich $450,000 Carib Brewery Ltd Midsummer Classic at Santa

Rosa Park, Arima, yesterday, Indian Arrival Day, and keep on course to give trainer Glenn Mendez his third Triple

Crown.

The Junior Sammy-owned colt was always up with the leaders Lawbreaker, and Galveston throughout the 1,900 metres

race.

And as the horses swung for home, Venezuelan rider Santiago Gonzalez asked the son of Big Country/Little Sophia to

go on and he flew down the stretch to win by a long-looking 11 ½ lengths from a struggling Galveston while

Frankenstein ran on from the middle of the group to get third ahead of a fading Lawbreaker.

Not only did Touch D Road who won the first leg, the Easter Guineas, stamp his class on his three-year-old

compatriots but he destroyed the race record time, finishing in one minute 58.31 seconds, eclipsing the time of

Crown Point in 2005 of 2:00.61.
