FORT ERIE RELIEF

but ELISSA BLOWE leaves for OLG

Fort Erie Post
By James Culic

FORT ERIE – With the recent unveiling of Ontario’s provincial budget for 2016, a bit of welcome news the horse racing industry had been waiting for was finally let out the gates.

“This is something we had been expecting for some time now and we’d been hoping for and it’s certainly good news for us,” said Tom Valiquette, the recently appointed COO of the Fort Erie Race Track.

Back in 2012 the horse racing industry in Ontario was thrown into turmoil when the province announced it had scraped the lucrative slots-at-racetracks programs which had poured millions into the industry and beefed up prize money. Following that decision, the Ontario government announced its ‘horse racing modernization strategy’ which included some cash to make up for the loss of slot money and included plans to integrate the horse racing industry with the existing Ontario Lottery and Gambling (OLG) agency which operates the other gambling options in the province. That announcement included a plan to have OLG take over some aspects of marketing and promotion of the horse racing industry, but those programs never materialized in the ensuing three years.

WOODBINE WORKOUTS

CALGARY CAT, champion sprinter of 2014 and up for the same award this year (April 8 Sovereign Awards) was back on the worktab as he stretched his legs for a 3 furlong prep on Sunday at Woodbine in 38.80. The son of Cowtown Cat is trained by Kevin Attard for owners Cory Hoffman and Stephen Chesney.

The stablemate of the Cat, MELMICH, also a Sovereign Award nominee, worked the same distance in a quick 36, 4th fastest of 91 workers. Melmich, by Wilko, is a long distance specialist but certainly was quick on Sunday morning.

SKYLANDER GIRL, a multiple stakes winning mare for Alex Patykewich, continues to work like the wind on the training track. On Sunday she sizzled 4 furlongs in 47.60.

On Sunday, 127 horses had timed workouts.

SATURDAY was also busy for the clockers as 142 horses made time including stakes winner GOODOLDHOCKEYGAME, who went 4 furlongs in 47.60 for trainer Robert Tiller.

Ontario bred UNBRIDLED JUAN broke through for his second career win when he took an optional claiming/allowance at Gulfstream on Sunday at odds-on. The 4-year-old ridgling by Unbridled’s Song is a homebred for Stronach Stables and he is currently trained by James Jerkens, who took over fro Brian Lynch last year.

Speaking of BRIAN LYNCH, the former Woodbine trainer had a huge weekend with stakes wins by his new arrival BACIAMI PICCOLA winning the Grade 3 Florida Oaks, his own POWER ALERT winning the Silks Run Stakes at GUlfstream on Saturday and Schoolofhardrocks winning an allowance race at Tampa.

SOPHIA’S SONG, recently sold by Janice Attard and Abraham Hadeed to Mathis Stable and Head of Plains Partners, won the $80,000 Caesar’s Wish Stakes at Laurel on Saturday. The Bellamy Road filly was coming off a big allowance win at GUlfstream for her Canadian connections and trainer Sid Attard before being purchased and moved to Todd Pletcher.

BROOKLYNSWAY RACES FOR NEW OWNERS – Friday’s $50,000 Esplanade Stakes at Fair Grounds produced an eight-horse field of impressive proportions, including last out Grade II winner Ahh Chocolate and recently Grade I-placed Savings Account. At a mile and 70 yards over Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots’ main track, the Esplanade also attracted stakes winners Steel Cut and Brooklynsway, as well as last-out allowance winners Tiz Lately and Emmajestic.

The expected favorite is 5-2 morning-line choice Ahh Chocolate. A Stoneway Farm homebred daughter of Candy Ride, the Neil Howard trainee began her career at the New Orleans oval on Feb. 21, 2015 – Risen Star Day – with an eye-opening graduation over subsequent stakes filly Thoughtless. She went on to quickly become graded stakes-placed around two turns before breaking through at said level in her 3-year-old finale, the Grade II $200,000 Falls City Handicap on Nov. 26 in which she impressively drew clear of her rivals by 1½ lengths under Brian Hernandez, Jr. Hernandez has the mount again from the rail in what is likely a prep for the Grade I $600,000 Apple Blossom Handicap on Apr. 15.

Naveed Chowhan’s Brooklynsway, 6-1, will make her first start on dirt after 13 career races in Canada over Woodbine’s turf and Polytrack surfaces. Previously trained by John Ross, she is now in the care of Bernie Flint and has posted a series of strong works over the local strip. A four-time stakes-winning daughter of Giant Gizmo, she easily leads the field in earnings with $537,241 – more than both Ahh Chocolate and Savings Account combined. Robby Albarado rides from post six.

At Gulfstream...the 20-cent Rainbow 6 went unsolved for the 44th program in a row Sunday at Gulfstream Park, resulting in a $3,256,830.56 carryover when live racing resumes Wednesday afternoon. First race post time is 12:35 p.m.

A total of $564,463 was wagered into the Rainbow 6 Sunday, when multiple tickets with all six winners each paid $25,284.74.

The carryover jackpot is only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day’s pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.

The Rainbow 6 was last hit for $76,799.38 by one lucky bettor on Jan. 13. The largest payout of the current Championship Meet, which began Dec. 5, was $262,634.84 on Jan. 7.

If the Rainbow 6 continues to go unsolved, there will be a mandatory payout on March 26.

Defending 12-time Championship Meet titlist Todd Pletcher is scheduled to seek his 4000th career victory when he saddles Vinny White Shoes for Wednesday’s 10th race, a 1-1/8-mile starter allowance on turf.

Pletcher, who saddled his first winner, Majestic Number, at Gulfstream Park Jan. 26, 1996, notched Win No. 3000 at Gulfstream Feb. 11, 2012 when he visited the winner’s circle with Spring Hill Farm.
