TREVE RETIRED after remarkable 2nd ARC WIN

Back problems and other health issues  could not stop the mighty filly TREVE from winning her second consecutive Prix de l’Arc de Trioomphe on Sunday at Longchamp. She was the first horse to win 2 Arcs since the great Alleged 36 years ago. Ton sof storylines went along with this gal as Frankie Detori was replaced as her rider earlier this year and that rider was later reported as saying the filly was not right in her personality for racing anymore.

BROWN PANTHER headed to Canada

Michael Owen and his Brown Panther, TDN photo

“I’m going to have rejig my diary to see him in Canada and it could be tight with the connections. I think I land around midday and then my flight back is at 8pm, but I’d never forgive myself if he won and I wasn’t there to see it!” – Michael Owen

Irish St. Leger winner BROWN PANTHER, a 6-year-old stallion, is expected to compete in the Canadian International on Oct. 19 and his presence will certainly cause some buzz at Woodbine. The horse’s co-owner is Michael Owen, the sensational footballer who, at 18, scored a famous, game winning goal in the World Cup for England.

Now in his 30’s Owen owns and runs Manor House Stables: horse racing has been an interest and passion since he was young. He is even taking riding lessons from one of his daughters.

WOODBINE SUNDAY – PAIR OF “66’S”

track strongly favours speed on cold, windy day

CONQUEST HARLANATE secured her spot as the possible champion 2-year-old filly in Canada as she doubled up and won the Grade 3 Mazarine Stakes on Polytrack, just weeks after winning the Natalma Stakes on the grass. The Bill Graham-bred filly by Harlan’s Holiday defeated Brooklynsway (by Giant Gizmo) and front runner Del Cielo (by Philanthropist) to win the 1 1/16 mile race in 1:45.22 – just a 66 Beyer Figure.

The Conquest Stables filly is in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf and grass may be her best surface. She is the 9th winner from 10 foals for the Dixieland Band mare Alison’s Pride. Conquest Harlanate was twice been through the sales ring as a yearling at Keeneland, selling for $75,000 at the January 2013 horse of all ages sale to Black Hawk Stables through consignor Four Star Sales. In September, the bay filly was a $120,000 sale to Lisa Orth when consigned by Dromoland Farm, agent

The Grey, raced 2 events earlier, also got a 66 Beyer Figure as Ken and Sarah Ramsey’s came from last place to win under Rafael Hernandez. Conquest Typhoon (Stormy Atlantic) was 2nd and the maiden Hollywood Critic (Blame)  was 3rd. His time for 1 1/16 miles was 1:45.15, also a 66 Beyer Figure. The winner was an $85,000 yearling purchase and he is by Fusaichi Pegasus.
Also on Sunday… the rolling Barbara Minshall stable continues on with STACKED DECK winning the 9th race, an allowance race at 6 furlongs on Polytrack. The son of First Samurai posted an 86 Beyer in this 3rd win in 7 races. Emma-Jayne Wilson rode.
Race 10 – Adventure at Sea was the logical winner in thiw $40K claiming race at 7 furlongs on the grass. The Jim and Susan Hill 4yo filly  is a Canadian bred (Jim Begg) and she is 2 for 15 in her career. Brian Lynch trains and Gerry Olguin rode
The highest Beyer Figure of the day was the 95 Beyer earned by CHIEF CHATO in race 2. This 4yo by Tomahawk is in wild form right now, 3 wins in his last 4 races and this has been since he added blinkers. Owned by Lisa McCallum Smith and Cindy Cox, Greg Cox trains this speedster. He is 5 for 19 in his career. The time was 1:22 for 7 furlongs.
Conversely, the 1:47.71  for the 1 mile and 70 yards negotiated by 2yo fillies in race 1, a maiden $20K claiming race,  translated into a winning Beyer Figure of 11. The winner was B T ‘s Baby, owned by Natural Eight Stable and trained by Bill Tharrenos. The winner is by Vibank.

SILVER DEPUTY  – put to rest at age 29

Canadian-bred, influential sire Silver Deputy was euthanized last Saturday due to the infirmities of old age, it was announced Monday. A pensioner since 2008, the 29-year-old resided at Fred Seitz’s Brookdale Farm near Versailles, Kentucky, where he was buried.

Silver Deputy was from the first crop of two-time leading sire Deputy Minister. Purchased for $200,000 by Windfields Farm at Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July, he captured both of his outings as a juvenile in dominating fashion at Woodbine. The Mac Benson pupil romped by 6 1/2 lengths in a sprint maiden and followed up with a 3 1/2-length decision in the Swynford Stakes. Unfortunately, the exciting prospect then suffered a career-ending knee injury.

Retired to stud at Windfields Farm in Ontario, Canada, for an initial fee of $2,500 in 1989, he became an immediate sensation with his first crop to race, finishing a close runner-up to Forty Niner on the 1992 North American Freshman Sire List. He was then moved to Brookdale Farm where he spent the remainder of his career.

His stud fee rose to $75,000 in 2000, by which point he had ranked among the leading North American sires in 1998 and 1999. Silver Deputy sired 694 winners of more than $88 million, including seven champions and 88 stakes winners.

His leading progeny include Hall of Famer Silverbulletday, an Eclipse Award winner in her division at both two and three, as well as Canadian champions Archers Bay, Deputy Imes, Deputy Jane West, Scotzanna, Poetically and Larkwhistle.

SHIP IN- WIN

Woodbine Entertainment Group (WEG)  announced an initiative in an effort to enhance its Thoroughbred allowance race program at Woodbine.

Effective immediately, until the end of the meet on Sunday, December 7, WEG will give $1,000 to the owner per ship-in starter in allowance races. Eligible horses must be stabled and trained outside Ontario.

“This new program offers many benefits for both the horseperson and the racing customer,” said Steve Koch, WEG’s VP of Thoroughbred Racing. “It’s been our experience that out-of-town horsemen that race at Woodbine look forward to a return trip. This offer makes that travel even easier. For the racing customer, it will attract additional high quality and high profile horses, therefore delivering a more appealing wagering product.”

Woodbine offers $540,000 per day, including allowance purses that range from $56,000 up to over $100,000 including bonuses.

SLAGLE IN AS RACING SECRETARY

Woodbine Entertainment Group (WEG) today announced the hiring of Stuart Slagle as its new Thoroughbred Racing Secretary.

Slagle, 47, is currently the Racing Secretary at Hastings Park. His appointment at Woodbine is effective November 10.

After stops at race offices across the continent, including Colonial Downs, Sunland Park and the Maryland Jockey Club, he became the Racing Secretary at Manor Downs, Arapahoe Park and finally Hastings in 2013.

“We respect Stuart’s experience in racing,” said Steve Lym, WEG’s Thoroughbred Director of Racing, who has also held the Woodbine Racing Secretary role since 2003. “He brings a fresh perspective that will greatly benefit our racing program. He has experience with American racetracks, but a familiarity with Canadian racing and its intricacies as well.”

“I’ve watched and admired Woodbine racing for many years,” said Slagle, who was born in Ohio and raised in Texas.  “I’m thrilled to be joining such a first-class organization like the Woodbine Entertainment Group.”

The 133-day Woodbine meet concludes on December 7.
