CANADIAN BREEDERS’ CUP STUFF – BREEDERS’ CUP ON TSN 2, 5 P.M. FRIDAY, SATURDAY

From champion LEIGH COURT in the Filly and Mare Sprint, through the quarter for Mark Casse (3 Canadian-breds) to locals SOMETHING EXTRA and GRAND ARCH, there are some Canadian horses to cheer for at the Breeders’ Cup. This could be one of the best years for the locals.

There are some others with some local/Canadian ties – JESSE CAMPBELL rides for his dad Michael in the Juvenile – PRIVATE PROSPECT – western Canada is represented by  MAJESTIC PRESENCE and BLUE DANCER, ad JUDY THE BEAUTY and PRIVATE ZONE are wonderful Canadian breds.

MARK CASSE at the post position draw:   (Conquest Typhoon, Juvenile Turf, Post 6; Conquest Harlanate, Juvenile Fillies Turf, Post 11; Conquest Eclipse, Juvenile Fillies, Post 4; Kaigun, Mile, Post 7) – “We were pretty fortunate this year and are quite happy with the way all of them drew. We would have loved to have Conquest Harlanate a little more inside, but we’ll take it. It’s not terrible and it’s certainly not like last year when My Conquestadory drew the 14 (in the Juvenile Fillies Turf).

That’s a really nice post for Conquest Typhoon. He should have enough speed where Patrick (Husbands) can put him in the right spot

. Conquest Eclipse’s post is perfect. The horse to beat (Angela Renee, who beat her by 1 ½ lengths in the Chandelier Stakes last out) is inside of us (post #2) this time, and as long as she gets a clean break and can show some speed into the first turn, she can go on from there

. Kaigun got a great post. He’s been coming from the clouds in last couple of races, so if he breaks well, Patrick will be able to get him into a good position as well and let him run his race.

 

Canadian owners Susan and Jim Hill’s Grand Arch, who is having a career season at age 5, worked five furlongs on the dirt Oct. 25 at Keeneland in his final drill for the Breeders’ Cup Mile (gr. IT) at Santa Anita Park.

With Julien Leparoux aboard for trainer Brian Lynch, Grand Arch went the distance in 1:00 4/5 in company and galloped out six furlongs in 1:14 2/5.

“That was his last serious work (for the Breeders’ Cup),” Lynch said of Grand Arch, who is scheduled to ship to Santa Anita Oct. 28. “He’s ready to go out and enjoy some of that California sunshine.”

Of his plans for the week leading up to the Nov. 1 BC Mile, Lynch said the Arch   gelding, to be ridden by John Velazquez, will jog Wednesday, gallop Thursday, and jog Friday. Grand Arch also may school in the paddock, he said.

Grand Arch has one victory this year, in the King Edward Stakes (Can-IIT) at Woodbine. But he finished a neck behind victorious Seek Again in the Fourstardave Handicap (gr. IIT) at Saratoga Race Course and second, beaten a length by defending Horse of the Year Wise Dan, in the Shadwell Turf Mile (gr. IT) at Keeneland.

SUNDAY AT WOODBINE – THE DOCTOR IS IN!
and River Seven wins the Labeeb again

Two stakes races on the Sunday card at Woodbine were both won by Jesse Campbell, who won the last Pick 3, all coming a day after he was tossed from Thats the Gaff before a maiden race. Rested up, Campbell won with GREEN DOCTOR on the pace in the Fanfreluche Stakes and then just off the pace on RIVER SEVEN in the Labeeb Stakes.

Now, Green Doctor, owned and bred by Paul Mouttet of Trinidad and trained by John LeBlanc Jr., had a bit of an easier time in this race because of the misfortune of another gal, heavy favourite POHDI POHDI, who reared up on her way over to the paddock and was bruised up, necessitating her scratching from the race.

GREEN DOCTOR, by The Green Monkey out of Junior Prom Queen, by Eddington, had a brief duel with Starless Night, and then pulled away to win the 6 furlong dash in 1:10.07, a 72 Beyer Speed Figure. Her sire, the $16 million 2yo in training – winner of $10,000 – sire in Florida, has had only one other offspring win more money that this gal, Kinz Funky Monkey ($202K). Green Doctor has won $170,000.

Recent purchase GALINA POINT was a nonthreatening 2nd for Gary Barber and the Saffir filly may like a bit more distance down the road.

RIVER ROLLIN –

RIVER SEVEN is back to his top form at his favourite time of year. The 4yo by Johannesburg has been doing well this year, albeit in very tough races. Since his huge, track record setting run in the Harlan’s Holiday in Dec. on dirt at Gulfstream, the Tucci Stables gelding was outrun in the Grade 1 Donn and put away.

He came back with a troubled run in the King Edward and then good tries when 4th, 3rd and 4th in the Nijinsky, Sky Classic and Woodbine Mile. So, he was easy to love in the big drop to the overnight stakes – the Labeeb, a race he won last year by 10 lengths.

And, after a perfect trip behind the dueling Excaper and best Bard, River Seven rallied for a nice win with a 94 Beyer Figure.

Excaper maintained a narrow lead through the turn as Campbell angled River Seven off the rail and set the bay down for a stirring stretch run earning a 1 1/4-length win over a game and determined Excaper.  Cummings Road rallied for show money as River Seven covered the mile in 1:34.58 over a ‘firm’ E.P. Taylor Turf Course.

“I didn’t think anybody would go after the six horse (Excaper), but I was very glad that they did,” said Campbell. “I didn’t think we’d be going that quick and I was a little concerned I was letting him do too much down the backside, but I had to hold my position where I was. He really showed his class.”
Gonzalez was pleased to see the hard-trying gelding, an excellent fourth last time out in the Ricoh Woodbine Mile, notch his first win of the season.
“We gave him six weeks to point to this race and we were hoping for a not-so-firm turf course because he likes a little give to the ground,” said Gonzalez. “He’s ran in six graded races this year from the Grade 1 Donn to the (Grade 1) Ricoh Woodbine Mile last time and it was a little class relief for him today.”
River Seven, bred in Ontario by William D. Graham, banked $72,000 in victory while improving his career record to 5-5-2 from 20 starts.

More Sunday –

race 1- COLINS NIGHTINGALE, owned by Ten Easy Pieces, won this $6,000 claiming race under Emma Jayne Wilson. Ian Black trains the homebred by Stormin Fever who is 5 for 26 in her career and close to $100,000 in earnings.

race 2- Looking like a contender for the 2015 Queen’s Plate, NIPIGON won his 2nd career start in this 1 1/16 mile maiden allowance race. The son of Niigon is trained by Rachel Halden for owner/breeder Chiefswood Stable. Steve Bahen rode. His winning Beyer Figure was 62.

race 3- ANY GIVEN ROYAL wore down first time gelding AWESOME OVERTURE to win the 3rd race, an allowance/optional claiming event at 1 1/16 miles on Polytrack. The winner is owned by Jim and Susan Hill and  he is 3 for 8 this year for trainer Brian Lynch. The Beyer was  83.

Race 4 – OSUUSPANKKI, at the age of 6, led all the way to win this maiden allowance for Ontario sired rivals for breeder Keith Nicholson and trainer Lisa Burry. The son of Philanthropist – M’ian Mar has had 6 trainers in 11 races. He won the 7 furlong race in 1:22.96 – a 77 Beyer Figure – and Ericka Smilovsky rode.

Race 5 – He wins races as owner lots as a trainer, and now MARK CASSE has bred a maiden winner – MODUS OPERANDI, from the first crop of MARCHFIELD, led all the way to win this maiden $25,000 race at 1 1/16 miles under Gary Boulanger. Modus Operandi is owned by his wife, Tina (Quintessential Florida) and the dam is Saving Ground.

Race 6 – A pair of Hawks – SPARROWHAWK and GOODNIGHT HAWK – ran 1-2 in this turf sprint. Patrick Husbands relaxed the light grey SPARROWHAWK on the lead and the gelding went all the way on the pace to win for the 3rd time this year. It was likely a bittersweet win for Chris and Patrick Fung, owners and breeders of the Old Forester colt, and trainer Tom Bowden, as their horse Lord of the Jungle had died suddenly the day before. Sparrowhawk gave them a nice present with this win, his 4th in 19 career races.

Race 7- SATURDAYATBERNIES has won 5 races this year, 4 at Woodbine including this last gasp nose-score for $25,000 claiming; He had not raced since late August for Julia Carey and Robert Melrose and was taking a bit of an edge. It was amazing he got up to win as the track was favouring speed and BUONGIORNO JOHNNY looked like he had led all the way to win. The latter was claimed by RCC Stable. ‘Bernie’ was ridden by Gerry Olguin.

Race 10  – FOREIGN ACCENT won this $7,500 claiming race after his maiden win for $15,000. The son of E Dubai is owned by Dan Vella (who also trains) and C. Martin and Jesse Campbell rode.
