Eight of the finest Canadian-bred three-year-old thoroughbred horses will compete in the 81st running of the Prince of Wales Stakes. A $500,000 purse will be up for grabs on Tuesday, July 26 at the historic Fort Erie Race Track.

The Post-Position Draw was held on Friday afternoon. Final entries include the top three finishers from the Queen’s Plate and other excellent contenders, making this year’s battle for the 2nd Jewel in the Canadian Triple Crown one of the most exciting in recent years.

Listed at 2-1 morning line odds, Sir Dudley Digges, trained by Michael Maker will continue his quest for the Canadian Triple Crown. Jockey Julien Leparoux will once again take the reins after the duo won the Queen’s Plate on July 3.

Amis Gizmo, the second place finisher from the Queen’s Plate, is listed at morning line odds of 5-2. Amis Gizmo was at the border oval for training on July 19, with jockey Luis Contreras and trainer Josie Carroll.

“The track is perfect, they’ve got it very nice and I liked the surface,” said Contreras after the run. “The horse let loose like he loves the track and I’m very happy with him.” When talking about the Prince of Wales, Contreras said he’s looking forward to the race, and would have no second thoughts about taking the lead early if he sensed it was the right move. “On dirt you can take the lead no problem, and keep going all the way.”

Third place finisher in the Queen’s Plate, All On Red entered the race and will have Eurico Rosa Da Silva at the reins. Da Silva won the 2014 Prince of Wales Stakes with Coltimus Prime.

Jockey John Velazquez, one of top jockeys in North America will ride Battery, trained by Todd A. Pletcher, the current money-winning leading trainer in North America.

Other contenders in the race include Leavem In Malibu for jockey Gary Boulanger, Leo From Heaven for jockey Emma-Jayne Wilson, Narrow Escape with jockey Sheena Ryan, and Niigon’s Edge for jockey Alan Garcia.

The Prince of Wales Stakes take place on Tuesday, July 26 at the historic border oval in Fort Erie. First race post time is 4:15 p.m. with the Prince of Wales Stakes running at approximately 7:40 p.m. The race will once again be aired live on TSN. After the races, fans can enjoy a free concert at the Tiki Bar Patio with the Elton Lammie Band.

WOODBINE RECAP

 

A ‘heat dome’ continues to hang over southern Ontario with temperatures well into the high 30s Celcius (in the 100s F) and virtually no rain.
It was fitting that the first race at Woodbine on Friday was a scorcher….

It was a clockwise 5 furlong turf dash for $40K claiming and the filly KASUGA hugged the rail and zoomed past her male rivals to win by 5 lengths in a rapid time of 56.27.

Since Woodbine has never run a race at 5 furlongs on the grass counterclockwise, it is tough to know how fast that actually is but she won big and the Beyer Figure was calculated at 80.

Kasuga is owned by Gail Wood and Dr. Ruth Barbour and trained by Phil Gracey. Emma-Jayne Wilson rode.
Congratulations to KRISTA COLE who won her first race of the season with her new claim PONAGE who won by 6 3/4 lengths in race 2 for $20,000 claiming. The Strut the Stage filly was taken for $8K in her last race which she won. Jermain Bridgmohan rode the winner and he gave the 4yo a super ride.

MECHANICAL had a lovely ride from Rafael Hernandez to win race 3 for $37,500 claiming. The 5yo by Survivalist had a rapid pace battle to run at and was up to win by a head at 3 to 1 for trainer Norm McKnight. The gelding is 3 for 12 in his career. He posted a 77 Beyer Figure for 1:11.11 for 6 furlongs.

Speaking of winning off the claim, handicapper TOMMY MASSIS and his ownership group Calico Racing, won with the first starter, CONSCIOUS DECISION, who took a $50K claiming race for maidens on grass in race 4.
The son of Cape Blanco is trained by Norm McKnight and Eurico da Silva rode.His Beyer Figure for 1:40.48 for 1 1/16 miles on turf was 78.

Race 5 was a maiden allowance for ONtario sired 2yo filleis and 2nd time starter HOPPING NOT HOPING rallied to win for the ownership group of Murray Smith, Chris Chop and Katharin Von Gavel. Barbara Minshall trins the Silent Name (Jpn) – Delray Beach, by Harlan’s Holiday filly who was bred by Roger Fortier and raied at Willow Ridge Farm.
The filly was bought from the CTHS sale at Woodbine last fall for $25,000 by Webb Carroll for Murray Smith.

There is a half sister to the filly in this year’s sale on Sept. 1. Hip no 226 is a Court Vision filly offered by Huntington Stud Farm. Jeff Alderson ride the winner.

TIZ BOBBY won for the 7th time in his career in race 6, an $8,000 claiming race and he was ridden by Alan Garcia for trainer Katarina Vassilieva. The Tiznow 7yo is 2 for 6 this year and he was claimed from this race by Bill Tharrenos.

THOR’S ROCKET won for the 2nd straight time when he took race 7, an allowance race at 5 furlongs for Ontario sired older horses. The Old Forester – Glory Royale, Tethra 3yo is a homebred for Buttigieg Racing Stable and also owned by Gus Vlahos.

Race 8 – the prep for the Flaming Page Stakes was won in total domination by GOODYEARFORROSES, an Irish bred 4to filly by Azamour owned by Lincoln Collins and Roger Attfield. The filly was 8th in the Grade 2 dance Smartly behind Lexie Lou but romped here by 4 1/2 lengths over Secret Action with Don’t Leave Me in 3rd. Alan Garcia picked up his 2nd win of the day.

COPPER TOP came out of traffic on the rail and won his maiden for $8,000 claiming for A Global Stable and trainer Darren Glennon in the last race of the day. The Old Forester 4yo is a homebred for Dr. Ron House and Luis Contreras rode.

SEVEN-YEAR-OLD SON OF DEHERE WINS DEBUT AT ELLIS PARK

Seven-year-old gelding Ain’t in No Hurry led most of the way in his first start to take Ellis Park’s second race July 22 by three lengths in the field of $16,000 maiden claimers (VIDEO).

“He just got put on the back shelf for a while,” said owner-trainer Kody Boyd, as he walked Ain’t in No Hurry toward the backstretch. “I had him in training as a 2-year-old, he just wasn’t mature yet. Same thing as a 3-year-old. Finally got him going as a 4-year-old—going good—and I went to work running the barn for Tevis McCauley, and he just didn’t have any space for him. So we turned him out in the field. I quit running the barn for him last year, and pulled him out of the field and thought we’d give him a shot before he got too old.”

SARATOGA!  Meeting begins sale coming up Aug 8

Opening Day of the 2016 season at Saratoga Race Course featured new attractions, the debut of Saratoga LIVE and an all-sources handle of $17,768,443, a less than one percent increase over last year’s figure of $17,706,202.

Total paid attendance for Friday, July 22 was 32,980, a five percent decrease over last year’s figure of 34,783. On-track wagering also declined, from $5,040,927 on opening day of 2015 to $4,703,479 this year, a 6.6 percent decline.

Opening Day was highlighted by Ancient Secret’s rousing win in the Grade 2, $200,000 Lake George and Sweet Loretta’s triumph in the co-featured Grade 3, $150,000 Schuylerville for 2-year-old fillies.

“There is nothing quite like opening day at historic Saratoga Race Course,” said NYRA CEO and President Chris Kay. “It’s a homecoming for all who make this sport great, and we’re thrilled to be back for 40 days of the world’s best racing.”

Opening Day marked the debut of Saratoga LIVE, the new racing program produced by NYRA TV, which is broadcast to an audience of more than 65 million viewers on Fox Sports 2 and MSG+ each day beginning at 4 p.m. and on Altitude Sports beginning at 3 p.m. MT. The program features a combination of racing coverage, analysis and feature items.
