THURSDAY WRAP

WEEKEND ROMANCE ROMPS

Frank Annechini and Rocco D’Alimonte’s WEEKEND ROMANCE was 3 to 5 for the featured turf dash as race 7 yesterday at Woodbine and this exciting gal cruised to a 4 1/2 length win to stay unbeaten this season. The chestnut by OLD FORESTER out of Seduction was bred by Hedgestone Management, sold by Gail Wood for $25,000 and  looks like a bargain.

She is 3 for 6 for trainer Catherine Day Phillips whose Kingfield Farms also own the filly.

The 1:21.10 time for 7 furlongs was good for an 81 Beyer Figure.

After taking 10 races to win her maiden, the consistently good Kentucky bred ADMITIT won for the 2nd straight time yesterday at Woodbine.

The daughter of E Dubai, owned by Joe Saffie, won for $40K claiming, the same price as her maiden score. She is now 11-2-5-3 with almost $100.000 in earnings. Ricky Griffith trains and Luis Contreras rode the 3yo.

Two consecutive wins by TYLER PIZZARO followed as he guided EVEN to win the 2nd for $40,000 for his first win of the season. The grey gelding is owned by Tucci Stables. Pizarro also hadOFFICER’S AFFAIR prominent near the pace to win the 3rd race for Bob Harvey and partners George Ledson and Al Wortzman. The filly was dropping from maiden allowance to maiden claiming – $25,000. She is an Ontario bred by Officer out of Ontheqt, Mazel Trick, bred by Reade Baker.

RMC STABLES’ CONSOLIDATOR JOE won an allowance race in game style to kick off the Pick 4. The Consolidator gelding, now 2 for 3 in his career; battled 70 to 1 shot Diamondsdiplmat to the wire to wn for trainer NOrm McKnight and jockey Eurico Da Silva. The gelding was making his 2 turn debut and is a half brother to long distance lover Kettle Rapids.

There was a lot of action in the 2yo maiden race, race 5, as all firsters but one were feisty and KATZ WITH A K wound up flipping in the tunnel and being scratched.

Alas, it was the lone experience 2yo who won the race – DANE’S WINCHESTER, who battled on the pace from the rail and won at 4 to 1 for Acott and Treena Ksionzyk. The B.C. bred is by Petionville out of Follow the Clues by Hold for Gold. He was ridden by Dave Moran.

Da Silva won again on Pin Oak Stud’s LET’S FORGET IT, who scored an upset in race 6, a maiden allowance for Ontario sired gals. It’s neat to see a big American stable like Pin Oak to win with a a $10,000 yearling purchase from the local sale.. The sizy gal was making her 2 turn debut and 2nd start of 2011. She is a Gardiner Farms bred by Where’s the Ring out of Word to the Wise (Diesis)

11 James Street El Prado (Ire) Husbands Casse 117

As for tomorrow’s race, it’s a real mish-mash of fellows. DON CAVALLO is the 3 to 1 favourite and he has strong Beyer Speed Figures. There are plenty of late running types in the 10 furlong race and only 3 in the big field of 11 have even tried the distance (none have won).

The pick from this corner is SO ELITE, to keep a Casse- Husbands roll going but STATELY VICTOR likes Woodbine, and invaders CENTER DIVIDER and ALCOMATCH are interesting. JAMES STREET is upwardly mobile and a selection of others have comparable Beyer Figures.

Speaking of Beyer Figures..come out to WOODBINE ON SATURDAY FOR A BEYER FIGURE SEMINAR with..ANDY BEYER!!

So many horsepeople at Woodbine continue to be dubious about the Beyers, so why not come out and ask questions about the ‘figs’ with Andy himself?

QUEEN’S PLATE AFTERMATH

Whew, that was a hectic week with so many stories to ponder, lots of things to write and in the end, it was a good result to Canada’s most famous race.

INGLORIOUS is probably the best of the crop it seems and while her 90 Beyer Figure is on the low side, she did run fast for 1 1/4 miles, 2:02.63, VERY CLOSE TO THE 2:02.18 RECORD.

Now the question is, will the star filly, only the 6th to win the OAKS -PLATE DOUBLE go to Fort Erie for the Prince of Wales or will the Donver team try to go for the big races at Saratoga?
