DETOUR IN THE ROAD

103 Beyer for Smokey

What was supposed to be a showdown between Jungle Wave, Field Commission and El Brujo – fighting for sprinter of the year in Canada – turned out to be nothing of the sort yesterday when SMOKEY FIRE and new rider EMMA-JAYNE WILSON won the $150,000 grade 3 event for Mel Lawson’s Jim Dandy Stable. Sid Attard, who had 3 in the race including Jungle Wave, trains and he was quite surprised by the result.

“We nominated three,” noted Attard. “We were supposed to run Smokey Fire and Signature Red in a conditioned non-winners of three-other-than-maiden or claiming at 6 ½ furlongs. The races didn’t

go. We gave them a shot.

“He’s on his way to Kentucky on Tuesday. That’s it for him this year. We’re hoping he’s going to be a nice

horse next year.”

SMOKEY FIRE’S brother UTTERLY COOL, a top 2yo of last year, never did make it to the races this season so it

was nice for the Lawsom family to have Smokey to cheer for.

The mare, Destroy, a daughter of Eternal search also has this year’s 2yo stakes winner Ghost Fleet. It appears as if Smokey is the best of all three.

So, with the Kennedy Road complete, who will be champion sprinter for 2009? It will likely be FIELD COMMISSION, since he was 2nd yesterday and has been steady for the season.

But many of the awards – to be handed out in January, are up in the air still.

MORE FROM SATURDAY

CAROLINE DUQUET won her 4th race of her riding career in race 1 for trainer Mike Doyle and C. Scott Abbott (MISS DIRECT) and promptly hung up her tack for the year sothat she can have a full campaign as a bug rider in 2010.

MISS DIRECT was winning for the 2nd consecutive time and it was a $10K claiming event that the Trajectory gal won.

Trainer STEVE ATTARD won 2 of the first Pick 4 races on the card. MONEY SHAKER, owned by Jen Leuty and S. Pettle, won the $12,500 maiden fillies races. She is a homebred by the impeccably bred stallion TUMBLEBRUTUS, a full brother to Giant’s Causeway who stands in Chile.

How about the nifty debut run for ROMAN GAMES – at almost 30 to 1 in race 5?

This is a ROMAN RULER baby owned by Rob Smithen and trained by Paul Attard. The colt rallied up the rail to win the maiden allowance at 6 1/2 furlongs with a 70 Beyer Figure.

A $45K yearling purchase in Kentucky, the colt was bred by Hill ‘n’ Dale Farms in Ontario.

That $60.00 winner was followed by an unlikely winner at 16 to 1 in race 6 when SIERRA CAT rallied under Terry Husbands to win the $20K claimer for his first score of the year. The grey gelding from Audra Cappuccitti’s barn had shown next to nothing in his races this year.

KID CANUCK, owned by John Richter, won a 2yo allowance race for his 2nd win of his career and trainer Steve Attard was again in the winner’s circle. The chestnut colt is by Kitten’s Joy.

Red hot DASH IT DREAMER won her 3rd race in succession for Harlequin Ranches and trainer Reade Baker. The Ontario sired gal by Kiridashi won an allowance races that was originally a 13 horse field that was cut down to just  7.

And WHERS THE JUICE won his maiden for Jam Jar and trainer John Ross in the maiden allowance finale – holding off a closing PRADA BOY, who was making just his 2nd career start. Whers the Juice is by Where’s the Ring.

BESSARABIAN HONOURED

A super field of filly and mare sprinters is up today on the 11-race Woodbine card – 2 more Sundays left in the meeting!

SMART SURPRISE, the leading candidiate for champion older mare in Canada, comes off a freshening for Hill N Dale  Equine Holdings and should be a toughone against a good field.

She won the race last year.

Supplemented to the race is SWEET LORENA, an invader from Finger Lakes who has turned into a synthetic track monster for trainer Mike Prgno. She is by Langfuhr out of a Geiger Counter mare.

And AUTHENICAT is looking to get back on the win side of the ledger and she comes in fresh for Viney and Fog City.

Alll in the field will be chasing the streaking TRIBAL BELLE, 4 for 5 this year and winner of 3 in a row including 2 stakes.

Twin Sparks sets new record at Turf Paradise

 By Jon Lees

A SIX-YEAR-OLD gelding claimed a new North American record for 6f on dirt when winning a handicap in a time of 1min 06.49sec at Turf Paradise racecourse on Saturday.

In capturing the Caballos del Sol Handicap by 11 lengths, Twin Sparks beat the previous mark of 1min 06.53sec, set by Bob Black Jack at Santa Anita in January 2008.

Ridden by Luis Medina for trainer Karl Myers, Twin Sparks led from the start and gradually extended his lead to notch his eighth career success in 22 starts.

“He’s a nice old horse who’s had a few problems,” Myers told the Daily Racing Form. “I guess he’s doing a lot

better today.”

A GOOD IDEA…
