Woodbine wrap ups

Cleaning off the desk (well, somewhat) – let’s look at some of the winners from Sunday’s races other than the 2 major stakes events:

Sunday – race 1
SOLO PLAYER won for the 4th time this year – remarkable for this 6yo who was toiling at the bottom claiming class last fall. Brad McKnight owns and Norm McKnight trains this Cuvee fellow bred by Jim Sabiston. The current interest have had him since last August.
Solo Player was ridden again by Alan Garcia and he has 10 career wins from 43 starts – this one coming for $15,000 claiming.
He paired up his top 80 Beyer Figure form his last start.

race 2 – This maiden allowance at 1 1/16 miles was marred by the breakdown of Revello, a Majestic Warrior filly who is a half sister to Uncaptured, the Horse of the Year a couple of years ago for John Oxley. Oxley also owns Revello, who was making her 2nd career start. The winner of this race was ONE NIGHT, who shipped in for Jim Bond and owner Bill Clifton Jr. Ridden by Patrick Husbands, this Distorted Humor filly was well beaten in most of her races on dirt and grass in New York but she loved the Polytrack and won in her 9th race.

race 3- This $10,000 claiming race was won by FLARING STAR, who led all the way and became the first winner for trainer George Billers. The Tap Day mare was making her 2nd start of the year and Sheena Ryan rode.

race 4- The ALYWOW Stakes was run over a very, very soft grass and trainer Mark Case sent out MISSISSIPPI DELTA, who had never run on turf, to win this race in her season debut. The bay filly by Giant’s causeway is owned and was bred by Mike Rutherford. Jackpot Ranch also own the filly. Alan Garcia rode.

race 5- an Ontario sired allowance race was supposed to be a showcase for heavy favourite JAVA’S BOURBON, a possible 3rd starter in the Queen’s Plate for trainer Roger Attfield but that colt had a dull run and the winner was ARTHUR’S PASS, a grey 4yo by Alphabet Soup who was winning for the 2nd time in his 3rd race this year. Julia Carey trains for Discovery Racing and Eurico Rosa da Silva rode.
race 6 – DISTRICT ATTORNEY rallied and blew away this field of $40,000 claiming mares in her 3rd start off the layoff. She is owned and traine dby Troy Wismer who has had 3 winners from 7 starters at the meeting. Jesse Campbell rode the Successful Appeal mare.

race 7 – Off the turf – a 7 furlong first-level allowance race and what a huge effort by returnee JOLLY DANCER, a 4yo colt by Singing Saint who posted an 83 Beyer Figure for this win in his first race since Sept. The dark bay Stronach Stables fellow is trained this year by Sean Smullen and Emma-Jayne Wilson rode him in this, his 3rd career race.

race 8 – a loaded allowance/optional claiming race and it was surprising to see champion and $800K earner ALPHA BETTOR in for a $62,500 claiming price but at a whopping 13 to 1, he got back into form and rallied to win at 6 furlongs under Justin Stein. Danny Vella trains for Bulldog Racing. The 7yo horse is 11 for 36 in his career.

race 11 a maiden allowance for Ontario sired rivals was off the turf at 1 mile and was run at 2 turns instead, 1 mile and 70 yards. COSMIC CHARLIE won as one of the favourites for Kingview Farm and trainer Cather Day Phillips. The North Light gelding was making his 3rd start off the layoff and Eurico Rosa da Silva rode.

as we mentioned recently, the wagering of $6.2 million was a stunning increase over $4.1 million last year.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT

Race 1 – HEAD HUNTER was all the rage in this 2yo maiden race based on a lot of big reports from the clockers. The handsome colt by head Chopper was bet off the board but he could not gain on the leaders and wound up 4th.
The winner was 2nd time starting HEY BEAR, a son of Kentucky Bear who carries the famous colours of the Hendrie Stable. Traineed by Mike Doyle, this colt was bred by Bear Stables, which is certainly on a roll.
First win of 3 for jockey David Moran.

race 2 – the high Beyer Figure of the night went to LOOKINGFORANEWHOME, who shouldn’t be doing that any time soon. He ran a strong race off the pace to win this 6 furlong allowance event at 4 to 5 for Buttigieg Training Centre and it was another win for Moran. The son of Dance to destiny is out of Moonlite Walk by Migrating Moon and he posted a 76 Beyer on a very slow Polytrack surface (compared to last weekend).

race 3- off the turf and heavily favoured ALILACTION rallied and won easily for Dan gale and Richard Hogan. Trained by Mike Doyle (2nd winner of the night), the Macho Uno filly was making her 2nd start of the year. Alan Garcia rode herin this $40,000 claiming race. She was bred in Ontario by David James.

race 4 – the Pick 4 started with a maiden race for $25,000 claiming and TOTZKE burst between rivals into the stretch and won on the class drop for Jim and Alice Sapara and partners. Josie Carroll trains and Luis Contreras rode the son of Ready’s Image.
race 5- an allowance/optional claiming race at 6 furlongs was won by MAHOGANY ROAD, who rallied inside to win under the red-hot Just Stein. This Janet Jeanpierre homebred is by Old Forester and she was winning for the first time in her 3rd race this year. Ian Black trains the 6yo mare.

race 6- a maiden allowance went to heavily favoured OIL STRIKE who just wore down Charlies Wisdom to win this 1 1/16 mile race in his 2nd start of the year, Gary Boulanger rode for John Oxley and trainer mark Casse. The 4yo was a $435,000 yearling purchase and he is an Ontario bred from Austin Paul.

race 7- another big fave – DR SPORT won again in this $8,000 claiming race under, who else? Justin Stein. The grey by Half Ours is owned by Sam Dipasquale and Mike Kowalski
but was claimed by  S A Racing. Two others, Devboted Wildcat and Fill Your Boots were claimed by Danny Acorn and Robert Elkins, respectively.

Race 8  – another favourite  – FORWARD RATE, a homebred for Canvasback Farms, won easily for $40,00 claiming. Trained by Danny O’Callaghan, this was the 3rd winner for Moran. The track was speeding up as the night went on and her time of 1:09.82 was a 69 Beyer Figure.

$2 million was bet on the night

DANZIG MOOON REMEMBERED

By: Dan Ralph The Canadian Press, Published on Wed Jun 17 2015

Time has done little to ease Mark Casse’s pain.

On Sunday, the trainer could only look on in disbelief as his prized horse Danzig Moon was involved in a fatal accident during the $150,000 Plate Trial at Woodbine Racetrack.

The 2-1 race favourite, arguably the highest-profile horse at Woodbine, was standing second to leader Midnight Trace in mid-backstretch before he suffered a compound fracture in his right hind leg and was euthanized.

“It’s been tough on me, very tough on Mr. Oxley (owner John C. Oxley) and especially crushing to Norman (assistant trainer Norman Casse, Mark’s son),” a sombre Casse said Tuesday afternoon. “The biggest problem is this: you don’t know why it happened

Royal Ascot underway

Gleneagles won the St James’s Palace Stakes and headed a 54-1 treble for jockey Ryan Moore at Royal Ascot.

The dual Guineas winner scored by two-and-a-half-lengths from Latharnach (25-1) to give trainer Aidan O’Brien a record seventh win in the race.

Moore went on to clock up wins aboard Clondaw Warrior and Washington DC.

Solow led a French 1-2 in the opening Queen Anne Stakes, while Goldream held off fellow outsider Medicean Man to land the King’s Stand Stakes.

Buratino was an impressive winner of the Coventry Stakes and is rated a 12-1 chance for next year’s 2,000 Guineas.

Moore clocked up a double when winning the Ascot Stakes on Clondaw Warrior for trainer Willie Mullins, with top jump jockey Ruby Walsh among those celebrating as his wife Gillian owns the horse with a group of friends.
