American Triple Crown winner American Pharoah will break from post position two for this year’s Grade 1 Travers Stakes, to be held Aug. 29.

A plane scheduled to transport American Pharoah and 2003 Kentucky Derby winner Funny Cide (who is slated to appear at the Travers) was en route from Lexington, Ky., to California Tuesday afternoon to collect Pharoah, who will likely arrive at Saratoga on Wednesday.

American Pharoah was listed as the 1-5 morning line favorite.

A TALE OF TWO STARS

WOODBINE SUNDAY WRAP

REPORTING STAR arrived in Ontario last spring and reeled off 3 straight wins in route races on turf and Polytrack. He then proved he was a top notch competitor with 2nd and 3rd place showings in the Grade 2 Sky Classic and Grade 1 Northern Dancer Stakes.

After a winter in Florida, the gelding just missed in his return to Woodbine in July in a 2 turn Polytrack allowance before turning back to 7 furlongs for the Grade 2 Play the King Stakes on Sunday on turf.

The 5yo Circular Quay Florida-bred was a longshot at 16-1 with the likes of Bobby’s Kitten, the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint winner from last year making his 2015 debut and Tower of Texas and Kaigun in the field but the tough gelding had different ideas.

Known as a handful and a feisty fellow, Reporting Star gave his trainer Pat Parente all he could handle in the walking ring, refusing to stay still to have the saddle put on. He had to be moved around a lot but Parente and his team got it done.

The gelding went out and got it done too, rallying inside in the late stages to duel Tower of Texas to the wire, get passed and then come back on to win by a nose under Luis Contreras.

Contreras had his hands full too as the gelding was lugging in strongly through the stretch to the point that the rider thought he may end up over the inside railing.

Nevertheless, it was a big effort for the gelding who is now 5 for 22 in his career and an earner of over $520,000 for Chad and Christa Joe’s Copper Water Thoroughbred Company, based in British Columbia.

Chad and Christa had a big weekend as their Bluegrass Angus won the Richmond Derby Trial Stakes at Hastings Park, a prep for the BC Derby (see results below)

The time of 1:20.66 was good for a 98 Beyer Figure, matching Reporting Star’s best previous Beyer Figure.

Parente said there are a few options for the gelding going forward and no doubt one includes the Woodbine Mile on Sept. 13.

Earlier in the day, it was another star, BILLY’S STAR, yet another good 3yo to come out of the Queen’s Plate and win a stakes race. This guy, the sales topper at the CTHS yearling sale 2 years ago, rallied from far back for Perfect Timer Partnership to win by 1 1/4 lengths.

Trained by Roger Attfield, the son of Perfect Soul (IRE) arrived at the 1 1/8-mile ‘Poly’ event from a third-place finish in a 1 1/16-mile allowance race on the E.P. Taylor Turf Course, using the extra sixteenth of a mile to secure his first stakes win.

Bring on the Bull was the early pace setter, posting fractions of 24.33 and 48.68 as both Conquest Pacemaker and U S Marshal pressed throughout. With Eurico Rosa da Silva on board, Conquest Pacemaker made his move at the quarter pole, taking over the lead up until the final eighth of a mile.

But there was no denying Billy’s Star, last of six for most of the running under Alan Garcia, who rallied five-wide late in the turn and swooped to a 1 ¼ length victory. Firespike arrived late for place money, a length in front of Conquest Pacemaker. Billy’s Star covered nine furlongs in 1.51.42.

The Beyer Speed Figure was 84.

Attfield had confidence in the improving bay, providing Garcia, riding Billy’s Star for the first time, with perfect pre-race instructions.

“He’s got a good turn of foot,” said Attfield. “I said to Alan that he’ll sit off the pace, no problem, and he’s got a decent quarter-of-a-mile kick. It all worked out well.”

Billy’s Star was bred in Ontario by part owner Charles Fipke.
