79 BEYER FOR MARITIMER IN CORONATION

Norseman Racing’s homebred MARTIMER stretched out well under a good rider to win the 108th CORONATION FUTURITY and he launched himself to the top of the Queen’s Plate winterbook list.
While the Coronation is one of those races for 2yos that has not been good to its winners lately – been more than 3 decades since the winner went on to take the Plate, this colt, by the red-hot Stormy Atlantic, is sizy and looks solid.
And so far, the Canadian lot of 2yos has not been stellar in races other than sprints.

The Woodbine surface was a lot faster yesterday than it was earlier in the week so when the times were looking fast, they weren’t as fast as you may think.

Martimer’s mum is the unbeaten Highland Ruckus mare Highland Moon, who raced for Norseman (Howard Walton).

MORE SUNDAY WOODBINE – The leading Canadian freshman sire VIBANK had another winner, 2 on the weekend, as  MONO CLIFFS won his maiden for $25,000 for Laurel Byrne and Wesley ward and trainer Brian Lynch.

The red-hot combo of trainer ANALSIA DELMAS and JOCKEY CHRIS GRIFFITH won again – COLD HARBOR won for $25,000 in race 2.

Frank DiGiulio’s ANYWHERE remained unbeaten in 2 races with an allowance win in race 5. the Where’s the Ring filly is out of Dan’s Duchess (Domasca Dan) and is a homebred trained by Robert Tiller.

CONSOLIDATOR JOE’S 5th win of the season in race 6 tied him for the lead for wins at the meeting
He is an RMC homebred by Consolidator out of Ascot Tobie trained by Norm McKnight. His win on Sunday was for $50,000 claiming:

BIG WIN FOR CANADA

Gerry Gibbs’ ALL STAR HEART won the Grade 2 Las Palmas yesterday at Santa Anita, the 5th win in the last 7 races for this Ontario bred filly.
This is an unusual story of a gal, by Arch out of an Ascot Knight mare,, who was tough to handle as a young horse. She began her career in Kentucky with trainer David Ashcroft and then raced for trainer Arthus Silvera last year. She raced in maiden allowance events but she did not pan out. She went to Ron McAnally late last year and has blossomed on the grass.
She earned an 89 Beyer Figure for her Las Palmas win.
Gibb’s black and red silks have been seen in Canada for many years (Devil Valentine) and he has Nasiriyah’s Song racing at Woodbine on Wednesday night.

ALL STAR HEART’s 2nd dam, Devil’s Council, is by Gibbs’ stallion DEVIL BEGONE, and she is a homebred from his Tullira Stable (former stable name). The dam is also a Gibb’s bred, she won her debut for $50K claiming under trainer Darwin Banach and then was retired after a stakes start.

GAYEGO TO ONTARIO

Grade 1-winning millionaire Gayego will enter stud in 2012 at the Hunderup family’s Norse Ridge Farm near King City, Ontario. Gayego comes to Canada through an arrangement brokered by Bernard McCormack’s Cara Bloodstock and will stand for an introductory fee of $6,500 Canadian funds, payable when the foal stands and nurses.

A multiple graded stakes winner of $1,751,120, the son of Gilded Time – Devil’s Lake, by Lost Code, raced at 2 and 3 for Cubanacan Stables and trainer Paulo Lobo before Godolphin acquired him privately prior to his 4-year-old season. At 2, Gayego was a precocious front-running 3-length winner in his 6-furlong career debut at Hollywood Park. At 3, he set a new track record at Hollywood Park, winning the 6 ½-furlong San Pedro S. by 2 ¾ lengths in 1:13.07 before leaving California for a victory the $1,000,000 Arkansas Derby.

Gayego made 5 starts in the Godolphin colors at 4, winning three times including the Grade 1 Ancient Title S. at Santa Anita – going 6 furlongs in 1:08.28 – and the Group 3 Mahab Al Shimaal Dayjur S. In his other two outings at 4, he ran second in the Group 2 Etisalat Godolphin Mile on Dubai World Cup Day and fourth, beaten a neck for first, in the $2,000,000, Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Sprint. He won twice at 5, setting another new track record with his 2-length score in the $250,000 Presque Isle Downs Mile while also placing in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile at Churchill Downs, the Grade 1 Triple Bend H. at Hollywood Park, and the Group 3 Xpress Al Shindagha Sprint S. at Meydan.

Gayego’s sire Gilded Time was an undefeated Eclipse Champion at 2 after three graded stakes wins including the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile S. and placed in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint in his 2 starts at 3. His dam, Devil’s Code, is a stakes-winning daughter of millionaire Lost Code. He represents an exceptional outcross for mares from most popular current sire lines, being entirely free of Northern Dancer, Seattle Slew, Mr. Prospector, Blushing Groom (FR), and Roberto breeding.

Gayego will be available for viewing at Keeneland during the November breeding stock sales. Please contact Bernard McCormack during the sales at 859.338.4135 to arrange a visit.  Gayego will ship to Canada later this month and may then be seen at Norse Ridge Farm. Please contact Jason LaMarche-Hunderup or Bernard McCormack at 905.886.7882, or by email at [email protected], for additional information.

BREEDERS’ CUP DUST BUNNIES

Everyone talked about the Breeders’ Cup yesterday at Woodbine – ‘how was your day?’ , win any money?,  how ’bout the Canadians and the Woodbine horses?

HARD NOT TO LIKE, EXCAPER and PERFECT SHIRL all ran well, the first named is the lone Canadian-bred. All 3 are expected to be finished for the season, at least locally.

PERFECT SHIRL, with just 2 races in Canada. is not eligible for any Sovereign Awards and while there was some discussion of her racing again in Canada, she has ultimately gone south. She could race during the winter:
from Breeders’ Cup notes:

Perfect Shirl (Perfect Soul {Ire}) will return as a 5-yearold next season following her upset in the GI Breeders’
Cup Filly & Mare Turf. “She’s going to Florida to have a little bit of a break  and she=ll start her next season in Florida, and then go to Keeneland. That=s how I usually do it. She took a long time to develop, and she’s really turned the corner the last five or six months.
ANDY BEYER – BREEDERS’ CUP FLOPS

“Drosselmeyer had not accomplished much since June 2010, when he won one of the weakest, slowest runnings of the Belmont Stakes in modern times. Now he is credited with winning the weakest, slowest Breeders’ Cup Classic everAndy Beyer, Daily Racing Form
