SAFETY ZONE IS NUMBER 12!

The field has been set for the 30th Barbados Gold Cup on March 5 at the Garrison Savannah racecourse near Bridgetown, Barbados.

Eugene Melnyk’s 7-year-old gelding Safety Zone drew post number 12 in a field of 14 that was drawn on Feb. 24. Only 12 will start in the 1 1/8 mile on the grass.

Safety Zone, who arrived in Barbados on Tues. Feb 22, could be Mr. Melnyk’s third winner of the Gold Cup following Kathir in 2004 and then Sterwins last year.

Patrick Husbands will ride Safety Zone, who is trained by Mark Casse.

Safety Zone, a son of King Cugat, is already a winner in 2011 as he won an event on the grass at Tampa Bay Downs in Florida in January.

His Gold Cup competition will come from American invader Grand Cash, who was won two consecutive races at Gulfstream Park for trainer Wesley Ward. Grand Cash’s jockey Is Jeffrey Sanchez.

The Gold Cup field also has Barbados stars such as Apostle, Rocamadour and Show Me the Money and top runners from St. Kitts Bad Action and Al Portador.
