It’s cross country morning at Rolex! There’s a certain feel to cross country morning especially at the big events. I’m very lucky to be staying on site thanks to the Camolio family, I got to know them this winter as Lee trained with Bruce and they have their beautiful motorcoach here in the campgrounds. when I woke up this morning and checked Facebook (an important part of any waking up ritual) there were already posts of people setting up camp at the head of the lake and my 5 minute commute to the barn tripled thanks to the steady line of cars streaming into the horse park. The weather is supposed to be a bit wet but we have been pretty lucky so far this week so fingers crossed especially for the horses later in the day.

The Camolios organized a course walk with Bruce last night to benefit Lee’s young rider team and easily 500 people came to listen to Bruce the legend. Someone asked how he thought the rain would affect the quarry complex which involves a lot of undulating ground and Bruce replied that “horses only slip when ridden badly” which was an interesting insight into balance and explains why Mark Todd and the like seem to be capable of equitation rounds in terrible conditions. Woody was very good in the dressage yesterday, the score could have been a bit better the 40s would have been nice but I thought he was very consistent and while of course I’m biased I think he presents a beautiful outline in the ring ! He’s about to go out for a nice hack before the rain hits so I’d better get him ready!

Here at Balsam Hall watching was not as nerve wracking as usual.  We were disappointed that Jess did not run anyone, with both her and Selena on the sidelines it was a bit of a wet blanket day.  The cross country was great to watch.  I felt that several of the combinations were not fit enough to run round Rolex in the heavy weather.  Of course we  all got together and did some serious eating.

The horses that got the bad batch of vaccine are all back into light work although it is noticeable that some of them are not back on form yet.  They are ‘OK’ but if you know them well then you can tell they are a bit lethargic still.  It was a very nasty experience that I hope I will never go through again.  The photos today are a few more of our sponsor’s booths at the trade fair.  We are very fortunate to have such wonderful sponsors, some of whom are into their ninth year partnering with us.  Thank you everyone, we couldn’t do it without you.
