I wish to express my deepest condolences to the family and many friends of Jordan McDonald. If the horse community in Canada is a small one, where there is never more than a degree or two of separation among us, the eventing community is like a nuclear family within it. Jordan’s death is not only a devastating loss. It’s a terrible reminder that there are real risks in equestrian sport, and – yes, let’s be honest here – eventing has the highest human risk of all the FEI disciplines. All the frangible pins in the world will never obviate the dangers inherent in galloping at speed over solid obstacles; but I very much hope that a thorough investigation into the cause of Jordan’s accident will give at least hindsight learning value to this tragedy.
