Dressage sensation Moorlands Totilas, who captured three gold medals at the World Equestrian Games with Edward Gal of the Netherlands, has been sold to German former showjumper Paul Schockemohle.

The 10-year-old stallion has broken every world record for grand prix, special and freestyle scores in the past year. Schockemohle, now a top European breeder, offered an undisclosed amount which owners Cees and Tosca Visser of Moorlands Stables decided to accept, even though they had maintained for years that the horse would not be sold. Following his double gold at the European Championships last August, the Vissers  made Totilas’s  frozen semen available to select mares for a record 5,000 Euro. Just last month, an embryo by Totilas sold for 32,000 Euro.

Totilas was originally bred and trained by Jan and Anna Schuil of Broeksterwoude, Friesland, who contacted Edward Gal and asked him to ride and compete the horse as a five-year-old. He was later purchased by Gal’s sponsors, the Vissers.

Said Cees Visser: “The past two years have been a whirlwind of excitement for us, and we’ve enjoyed watching Edward and Totilas again and again. After Kentucky, however, we could no longer ignore the interest in the stallion. Therefore, the time came to discuss matters with one another, and we decided to let Moorland’s Totilas go.

“Fortunately, Edward understands our decision to take a new path, and new challenges lie ahead. We consider Edward a top rider, and we’ll keep supplying him with potential top horses in the coming years.”
