John Oxley’s Strike Oil broke his maiden in stakes style by taking Sunday’s $250,000 Coronation Futurity at Woodbine.

The Mark Casse trainee rallied wide from well off the pace to prevail by three-quarters of a length over Charlie’s the Man in the event for two-year-olds, foaled in Canada. Enduring Star was third. The son of Forest Wildcat covered the 1 1/8-mile distance in 1:52.10.

Strike Oil entered the Coronation Futurity off two fifth-place finishes over the E.P. Taylor Turf Course. In both events, he finished less than three lengths behind the winner. “He lugged in a little bit. It was a little bit my fault because I didn’t shift my weight,” said winning jockey Luis Contreras. “He’s still learning.”

Strike Oil boosted his earnings to $241,040 in three career starts.

Strike Oil returned $30.70, $10.30 and $6.30, combining with Charlie’s the Man ($4.80, $3.80) for a $144 exactor. Enduring Star ($6) rounded out a triactor worth $1,056.10. A $1 superfecta returned $10,884.60.
