Six horses died at the Calgary Stampede, held July 9-18, 2010, causing yet another public outcry to shut down the event. Two horses died of heart attacks, three were euthanized because of injuries and the cause of death for one had yet to be determined pending a post-mortem exam. Four of the deaths were related to the chuckwagon races; one horse broke its back during the saddle bronc competition and another died during the team penning, seriously injuring its rider.

Last year, three horses died; the worst year for the Stampede in terms of loss of horses was in 1986, when 12 horses died.
