The fifth event in the eastern region of the 2011 Jump Canada Young Horse Series was held during CSI3* L’International Bromont from July 27-31 in Bromont, Quebec.

Tatiana Dzavik of Toronto, ON, topped the Seven and Eight-Year-Old Division aboard her horse Catwalk 19.  The pair was the only one to put in a clear performance in the opening round.  The eight-year-old Holsteiner gelding, bred in Germany, is by Contender and out of a Caretino mare.

Finishing runner-up was Troy, ridden by Johan Letimonier.  Their time of 79.97 seconds was just over the time allowed of 79 seconds, leaving them with a single time fault.  Bred by North Ridge of Orangeville, ON, and owned by Heidi Harris, the eight-year-old Canadian Warmblood gelding is by Indoctro and out of a dam by Flipper.

Dzavik and another mount, Winette, had the fastest four fault round to claim third place.  Stopping the clock in 72.56 seconds, the pair had the last fence of the double combination down.  Bred in the Netherlands, the eight-year-old Dutch Warmblood mare is by Ramon and out of a Jasper mare.

Canadian Olympian Beth Underhill of Schomberg, ON, captured first and second places in the Six-Year-Old Division.  She took the win aboard Cavendish, putting in the only double clear performance of the class.  A Dutch Warmblood gelding by Cantos, Cavendish is owned by Underhill and Teri Erickson and was the National Five-Year-Old Champion in 2010.

Underhill and Bastogne had the final fence down in the jump-off to finish second.  Bred in the Netherlands and owned by Underhill, the Zangersheide gelding is by Babouche van het Gehucht Z and out of a Chellano Z mare.

Rounding out the top three was Color Guard, ridden by Olympic team silver medalist Jill Henselwood of Oxford Mills, ON.  The Hannoverian stallion by Escudo had two rails down in the jump-off to finish with eight faults.  A product of the RCMP’s breeding program, Color Guard is owned by Katriina Ruotsalo of Whitefish, ON.

Roberto Teran of Colombia guided Coeur de Baloubet to victory in the Five-Year-Old Division with a double clear performance and a jump-off time of 40.56 seconds.

“It’s a big ring with many spooky jumps,” said Teran of the bay Canadian Warmblood stallion.  “The course was very technical and he just stepped up to the plate and was fantastic.  I couldn’t be happier with his performance.  He was very green when I started riding him last winter, but he is a very talented horse and continues to improve really quickly.  Every week he learns a little more and just keeps getting better and better.”

Bred and owned by Hawkestone Farms in Schomberg, ON, Coeur de Baloubet is by Baloubet du Rouet and out of a Cabrol mare.  Teran will to continue to campaign Coeur de Baloubet in the Jump Canada Young Horse Series for the remainder of the season, and expects the stallion to excel in the years ahead.

“He is going to keep doing the five-year-old classes all this year,” noted Teran.  “However, because he is a very big horse, we think he’s really going to shine when he hits seven or eight and gets to start jumping the bigger fences.”

No stranger to the Jump Canada Young Horse Series, Teran claimed numerous victories as a rider for KingRidge Stables in King City, ON, which features a large breeding operation.

“I rode for them for seven years and had a great time,” said Teran of his former employer.  “They have some really good horses and it was a pleasure to get to ride them.  However, I really wanted to explore different options in the business, and it seemed like the right time to make a change.”

Now partnered with Mark Hayes and Kestrel Farms in King City, ON, Teran hopes to continue to find his way into the winner’s circle.

“We are working towards regularly competing and winning in international competition,” explained Teran.  “The Pan Am Games would be great, and we will continue to pursue wins in FEI competition as well.  We will also be looking to continue to grow our importing business, bringing fantastic horses from other areas to the North American market.”

Yann Candele of Caledon, ON, aboard McKinley also put in two clear rounds.  Their time of 41.51 seconds was good enough for second place.  Bred and owned by Susan Grange of Cheltenham, ON, the Canadian Warmblood gelding is by Quidam de Revel and out of an Indoctro mare.

Wildcat, ridden by Bianca Lafontaine for breeder and owner South Shore Farm of Mont-Saint-Hilaire, QC, was third.  The pair had a rail down at the first fence of the double combination in the jump-off to finish with four faults in a time of 39.42 seconds.  The Holsteiner mare is by Bratt Z and out of a Landgraf I mare.

The purpose of the Jump Canada Young Horse Series is to encourage the development of young show jumping talent and to give Canadian breeders additional incentives to breed superior show jumping prospects.  Competing on a level playing field, the horses are divided according to age and jump at a level suited to their development.  This careful development allows the horses to gain valuable experience and advance to the higher levels of show jumping competition with confidence.  The Jump Canada Young Horse Series also gives prospective buyers for the hunter and jumper markets an opportunity to view a large group of prospects in a competition setting.

The 2011 Jump Canada Young Horse Series is truly national in scope with competitions being held from coast to coast.  The National Young Horse Finals will take place at the Canadian Show Jumping Tournament held from September 21-25 in Palgrave, ON.
