Ottawa’s Nepean National Equestrian Park may shut down, according to reports that the city-run facility is failing financially and no longer considered a core recreational service.
The park has been in operation for 25 years, as a horse show venue and boarding and lesson stable, offering various camp programs. There are seven full-time and 25 part-time seasonal employees.
A city report published Wednesday indicated that the park has registered a deficit averaging $140,000 annually for six years. That, combined with the rising cost of operations, has lead officials to consider closing up shop and finding another use for the 270-acre property.
