A mustang sanctuary in South Dakota has closed, leaving more than 800 horses at risk of slaughter.

It appears the group ran out of money to support the herd, which they had been allowing to breed.

CBS Denver reports that Colorado Horse Rescue has stepped in to help try to find homes for mustang horses of varying ages, health and condition. Others are encouraged to do the same before November 30th, after which, a public auction will be held, and it is expected a large number of the horses will end up headed to the slaughter house.
