Yesterday we placed the Working Equitation obstacles in the arena (including the gate) and had a go at them. I rode Zelador and demonstrated the obstacles to Christi McQuaker. Then she got on him. I’d “warned” her that Zelador goes on automatic pilot when you approach the gate. He’s very happy to do EVERYTHING: move parallel to it, turn, move his haunches, back up, move parallel to it and step forward. He only asks that you get you hand on the gate latch and hold on to it!
