ORC Manager of Veterinary Services Dr. Adam Chambers has been consulting with and meeting with veterinarians who are familiar with horses stabled at the Centre. In addition, an expert in EHV-1 from the University of Guelph has been consulted and brought into the investigation.

The goal is to make an informed decision on when it is fully safe for horses that are or were stabled at the affected training be allowed to race in Ontario.

Anne was a staunch supporter of the Ontario Horse Trials Association  serving as a director of the association.

As a competitor Anne was very successful. Starting with Dr. Broom  (who was banned from the race track for being badly behaved), Anne  recovered from a broken back and went on to compete him at the  advanced level with great determination. As well she brought on  Caliente Kisses to the advanced level and countless other horses at  all levels.

Anne will be greatly missed as a competitor, coach, trainer, director  and friend. Our heartfelt condolences to her husband and soul-mate Claus Zander.

A total of 107 stakes races, worth over $20.25 million, are scheduled.

The first portion of the stakes calendar, which features 37 added-money races through July 7, including the date of the 154th Queen’s Plate, was announced in March.

Key features in the “second half” of the schedule include traditional late season spotlight events, the Ricoh Woodbine Mile and Pattison Canadian International.

The Grade 1, $1 million Ricoh Woodbine Mile is set for Sunday, September 15 this year. The Mile is once again a Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” event (Turf Mile), as is its filly and mare companion on the date, the Grade 2, $300,000 Canadian Stakes (Filly & Mare Turf). Also on the power-packed card is the Grade 1, $300,000 Northern Dancer Stakes and the Grade 3, $150,000 Ontario Derby.

Many racing fans will remember Wise Dan crushing a strong field in the Mile last year en route to a multiple Eclipse Award-winning campaign, including Horse of the Year.

“The Ricoh Woodbine Mile is a premier event in the Thoroughbred racing world,” said Steve Koch, WEG’s Vice-President of Thoroughbred Racing, “Wise Dan obviously reinforces that distinction. We anticipate offering another brilliant field of world-class horses for the Mile, as well as the Northern Dancer, the Canadian and Ontario Derby that day.”

The Grade 1, $1 million Pattison Canadian International and its filly and mare complement, the Grade 1, $500,000 E.P. Taylor Stakes has found a later spot on the calendar. The pair is now set for Sunday, October 27.

“The later date allows every opportunity for runners coming out of major U.S. and European races to take advantage of Woodbine’s turf course,” said Koch. “Those that run well here usually move on to other races besides the Breeders’ Cup later in the year, such as Hong Kong or Japan.”

Three other “Win and You’re In” races are set for Woodbine. The Grade 1, $300,000 Nearctic Stakes returns as a WAYI race (Turf Sprint) and is set for Sunday, October 13, as does the Grade 2 two-year-old turf events, the $200,000 Natalma Stakes (Juvenile Fillies Turf) and $200,000 Summer Stakes, presented by TVG (Juvenile Turf). Both are set for Saturday, September 14.

The third and turf jewel of Canada’s Triple Crown, the $500,000 Breeders’ Stakes, is set for Sunday, August 18 at Woodbine. The Prince of Wales, the middle gem, is scheduled for Tuesday, July 30 at Fort Erie.

The announcement comes following a doping scandal at the end of April, which saw Godolphin trainer Mahmood Al Zarooni banned from racing for eight years by the British Horseracing Authority, after horses in his care tested positive for two banned anabolic steroids. While 11 horses actually tested positive, Al Zarooni admitted to administering banned substances to four others as well.

Sheikh Mohammed said, “We have firm convictions of the fairness in horse races and other equine sports in the UAE. We are keen to find a legal framework that preserves it so as to set an example that will be emulated in complete compliance with laws and international standards governing the noble sports. This confirms our determination to safeguard equine sports, which is deeply entrenched in history and heritage.”

Sheikh Mohammed has instructed authorities to expedite enactment of the bill as a preventive measure to combat the use of steroids in all forms and from its main roots.

The proposed law will criminalize any doping activities, from trafficking to consumption.

Sheffield, who currently resides in Lincolnshire, GBR, started out the competition with a seventh place finish (64.237%) in the FEI International Team Test aboard her 10-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding Wonderboy. The following day, she rose to fifth place in the Individual on a score of 66.146%. She finished on a high note, scoring 67.250% in the Freestyle for fifth place.

“My team and I learned so much from the experience. We have seen how we can up our game. It also gave us an opportunity to compete with the best in the world,” explained Sheffield. “The entire trip was a real eye-opener. I am absolutely psyched for the Hartpury and Bishop Burton CPEDIs later this summer.”

Canadian Team Coach Andrea Taylor was also excited about Sheffield’s prospects this season, stating, “We are really pleased with Roberta’s first competitions representing Canada. I look forward to working with her again this summer in the UK.”

2012 Olympic pair Tiffany Foster of Schomberg, ON, and Victor (an 11-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding co-owned by Artisan Farms and Torrey Pines Stable) contested the CSI 5*-level classes, pulling out a sixth place finish against some of the world’s best in the CSI 5* Table A. Against the Clock 1.50m. They also took fifth in the CSI 5* Table A. Against the Clock 1.45m.

Nicole Walker, who was part of Canada’s Silver Medalist Young Riders Nations’ Cup Team at the CSIO4* FTI Consulting Winter Equestrian Festival in Florida this past winter, competed in the CSIAm classes with two mounts.

Riding Blue Loyd 12, her 13-year-old Oldenburg gelding, she took second in the CSIAm Table A. Against the Clock 1.40m. She was also fourth in the class aboard her 11-year-old Swedish Warmblood gelding High Yummy. In addition, Walker placed fifth (Blue Loyd 12) and 11th (High Yummy) in the CSIAm Accumulator 1.40m.

Madison Park had been on hiatus since sustaining a serious leg injury while competing in England in 2011. The injury was projected to be career ending, but after a two-year break, Carter’s long-time partner is not only back in action, but once again competing at an advanced level.

The duo kicked off their return to Eventing by putting in an impressive Dressage performance that earned a score of 53.90 and placed them seventh at the end of the first day. During the following day’s Show Jumping phase, “Park” became slightly distracted by shadows and they added eight jumping faults for two lowered rails, bringing them down two spots to ninth position. However, they rose to their final placing of seventh after completing Hugh Lochore’s challenging Cross-Country course on Sunday, incurring 18 time faults, but no jumping faults for a total score of 79.90.

“Given the seriousness of his injury, (Park) really shouldn’t have made it back. It should have ended his career,” said Carter of his 2010 World Equestrian Games, 2008 Olympic Games, and 2007 Pan American Games mount. “Coming to Chatt Hills was about making sure he still had the power and edge to compete at this level. I wanted to make sure that he could still handle it, and he was great. I didn’t feel any residual effects from his injury.”

“He’s a very brave and willing partner, and was spectacular on course,” continued Carter. “I’m so happy to be back on him. He’s such a great competitor and has been a great horse for Canada. I’m very lucky.”
